Michael Bloomberg on marijuana: Legalizing 'another addictive narcotic' is perhaps 'stupidest thing anybody has ever done'
Newsweek ^ | January 23, 2020 | Tim Marcin

Former New York City Mayor—and potential 2020 Democratic presidential candidate—Michael Bloomberg called efforts to legalize marijuana "perhaps the stupidest thing anybody has ever done."

Speaking at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, on Tuesday, Bloomberg said on the subject, according to WBNG-TV:

"We have a different kind of problem in America, for example. Last year, in 2017, 72,000 Americans [overdosed] on drugs. In 2018, more people than that are OD-ing on drugs, have OD'd on drugs. And today, incidentally, we are trying to legalize another addictive narcotic, which is perhaps the stupidest thing anybody has ever done. We've got to fight that, and that's another thing that Bloomberg Philanthropies will work on it in public health."

There are other forms of addiction; I’ve known habitual users of mj and they are insane if they can’t get their ‘hit’.

He’s not wrong.

It's a habit, just like cigarettes. Only cigarettes is a more powerful habit because access to the product is easy.

I'm not going to argue with you because I have decades of knowledge, sadly. But happily that experience has disappeared from the rear view mirror now. But when I decided to quit I had no problem with quitting. I walked away and never looked back. Cigarettes were much harder to walk away from.

But like pot, when you decide to quit it becomes much easier to walkaway. But cigarettes has a much greater pull, which is why it is harder.

Inhaling anything but clean air is bad. IMHO. Smoking tobacco nearly killed me 20 some years ago. Asbestos may get me yet but not because I voluntarily do it.

I doubt it. The mj of the 70s 80s had a distinctive sweet smell. It made people mellow. Todays with much higher thc levels stinks. Skunk is an appropriate name. I see users who are teens and young people lose all motivation. Some move on to hard core drugs. But it will become legal.

i’m not really a big fan of legalizing pot, but:

1. pot isn’t addictive

2. pot isn’t a narcotic

3. bloomberg is a totally out-of-touch moron ...

Oh, you did very well. Sincere congratulations. I'll spot you three.

That's a real life anecdote. Here's mine: Clean living younger brother dead at 45. (We both know that's tough. Sorry for our losses.)

I've seen smart and dumb degenerates and failures and pot was not a factor.

Thanks for the warm wish, same to you :)

I can’t believe it, I agree with a Democrat.

When we see all the psychotic szhizophrenic people walking around in a few years, all dying of lung cancer and COPD, we will say, what were we thinking. Of course many of the dopers will die young, but we are going to have to support all of them, or euthanize all of them.

Smoking marijuana causes permanent psychosis and schizophrenia, especially when smoked in the teens. This is where a good segment of our crazy “homeless” come from.

As soon as I see someone refer to marijuana as “addictive” I know not to take that person seriously on the subject, the same way I don’t take leftists seriously on firearms when I hear them refer to AR-15s with 10 round “clips”. And that includes Freepers, too.

It can cause it. Esp for bipolar. Plenty of them running around.

Its going to become legal for taxes, to decriminalize and free up courts.

The national institute of drug abuse states 30% of users develop marijuana drug abuse disorder, which in its more severe firm can be addictive. I can believe that.

I agree. Perhaps the only thing that “Bloomie” and I have in common.

A politician who in his role as mayor of this country's largest city tried to outlaw large servings of soft drinks as a health risk can be expected to be against legalizing soft drugs such as marijuana.

What's next? Beer? Alcohol over 40 proof? Twinkies?

Billionaire Bloomberg should be considered a control freak, whether his party registration is Democrat, Republican or Socialist.

We have enough of them as mayors and state legislators. There is absolutely no need for any of this stripe in high federal office, which we can assume is Bloomberg's reason for entering the Democrats' presidential race. He doesn't expect to win, only get appointed to a cabinet post or chairman of some commission where he can tell ordinary people what to do.

There are two things about marijuana users that Bloomberg no doubt is sure of: (1) for most of them, it diminishes their motivation and employability; and (2), for a substantial if limited number, it will trigger schizophrenia or other mental illness.
