Illinois becomes first to do in-state coronavirus testing

The state health department hopes to detect cases earlier and prevent the disease from spreading.

Illinois is the first state to do in-state testing for novel coronavirus. The Illinois Department of Public Health said test results are typically available within 24 hours for specimens arriving at the department's Chicago laboratory, the agency said in a statement. IDPH is also working on bringing testing to Springfield and Carbondale.

“The ability to do this testing will mean we will be able to detect any new cases of novel coronavirus earlier and prevent any possible spread,” IDPH Assistant Director Evonda Thomas-Smith said in the statement.

“A quicker response will help alleviate concerns of those being tested as well as the general public,” Dr. Allison Arwady, commissioner of the Chicago Department of Public Health, said in the statement.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control & Prevention sent an initial 200 laboratory kits to select labs to test for the virus, known as 2019-nCoV.

Cases climb

The death toll in China from the coronavirus exceeded 1,000; the number of confirmed cases there stands at 42,638.

CDC confirms 13th U.S. case

The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention confirmed another case of coronavirus in California, bringing the number in the U.S. to 13.

The latest patient, in San Diego, was among citizens evacuated from Wuhan to the U.S. and under quarantine. The CDC said it is conducting an investigation to determine the patient’s contacts and assess if they had high-risk exposure.

I just saw this video. It’s of an American doing a street food tour of Wuhan back in 2016 and some of the food looks amazingly tasty (no bats) ...but what’s so sad is how friendly and jovial the city’s residents appear . They’re so excited to meet this American guy and so hospitable. Please pray.

And another endearing video. This time in Beijing from a few years back. Pedestrians are asked what they think about Donald Trump. (Hint: they like him a lot. And...”Ivanka is a goddess.”)

SO sad that their own government has to be such garbage.

You find the same pro-Trump feeling in African countries. They see the guy in some pro-commerce and pro-business stance.

Yes! I had a Ghanaian Uber driver in UK around US election time and he had Trump’s “Art of the Deal” in his glove compartment. :)

Been watching videos about (pre virus) Wuhan day and young expats explore the night life and learned that the entire city skyline and bridge puts on a light show by night. Very festive people. Stunning city with incredible bridges and views. Definitely supposed to showcase China of the future. Poignant that such a crisis hits it instead.

Prayers.

My doctor is of Asian descent and so are a lot of his patients. I was at his office for something routine yesterday and they asked if I had been out of the country in the last 30 days. There was a sign at the reception desk as well but the only staff wearing a mask was the phlebotomist (sp.) There were a few people in the waiting area, one wearing mask two not, I sat a good distance from anyone. At the store later on an oriental lady walked in the entrance as I was passing by. She was wearing a green mask “under her chin” and a few seconds later I heard someone with a bad hacking cough. UGH. To say this virus doesn’t worry me would be a lie. On top of that high flu numbers here apparently.

My DD has to get driver license renewed...That won’t be a fun wait in a crowded area with flu season and corona virus.

They thought masks protected you from the 1918 Spanish Flu epidemic, too
