The coronavirus could cripple China's economy for longer than Wall Street wants to believe
Business Insider ^ | 16 Feb 2020 | Linette Lopez

Wall Street is convincing itself that China will bounce back relatively quickly around the end of the first quarter, when it expects the coronavirus' spread to be contained.

This is banker delusion. China's economy is growing much more slowly than it was in 2003, when the SARS outbreak hit.

Plus, the financial sector is in much worse shape. It's loaded with debt, and credit conditions are still deteriorating from bailouts last year. This will all make it much harder to fund struggling businesses and local governments.

I’ve been posting that this IS going to have dramatic effect on markets eventually, but not well received. Oh well...also told people YEARS ago that illegal immigration was going to be THE issue and was ignored. lolol.

Meanwhile, people around the world are scrambling to find other sources who won’t be running back to China after.

Exactly, and this process is already well underway. We shouldn't underestimate the timing and impact of the USMCA agreement to hasten the replacement of Chinese manufacturers in various supply chains through a resurgence in North American manufacturing.

China's recent woes appear almost biblical in scope. Within the span of a year, Chinese agriculture has been decimated by flood, drought and disease, and now its giant manufacturing centers have been shut down by a pandemic. Subsidies are little help when there is no activity to subsidize.

Simply too early to know what will happen.

I have trouble believing the whole world won’t be in a recession or worse, very soon.

The PRC is so effing stupid. When are they going to simply embrace free-market capitalism? What does anyone get out of tyranny? What’s the payoff? I must be missing something.

You are missing something major.

The desire for power and authority over others.

The desire for status. It has been a major part of the human psyche forever.

The U.S. is an outlier in history. No other country has had as much freedom and prosperity for as many people for so long.

Tyranny is the default position for mankind.

I have been considering an essay on that.

President Trump - The U.S.A. will no longer subsidize China.

The Pig pandemic, killing off most pigs in China.

The Coronavirus, killing off people in China.

You could write a book, similar to Exodus, about how China conspired with the Pope to persecute Christians in China...

And Chairman Xi had a dream, and God said: Stop persecuting my people!

But Chairman Xi hardened his heart...

Hot weather will kill off the virus in a month or so. Africa has been spared because of its hotter climate. Only one case for the continent.

There are over 80 clinical trials going on now. Several of them look promising and hopefully we will be prepared by next year cooling of temperatures.

The New York City, Los Angeles and San Francisco real estate markets will weaken significantly as Asians stop transferring funds to the US by purchasing property. The Chinese especially appreciate the property right guarantees of US law.

” Hot weather will kill off the virus in a month or so. “

So we hope. Absolutely no scientific justification for that hopium, however, except reference to certain other distantly related virii.

“Hot weather will kill off the virus in a month or so. Africa has been spared because of its hotter climate. Only one case for the continent.”

Still unproven speculation. There are only (so it has been reported) two places in Africa that can even do the test. We don’t know what’s happening there. And it seems to be spreading just fine in some hot climates. The Equator is hot year round and Singapore is right on the Equator, essentially. The reason we aren’t hearing about even one case in Indonesia is suppression and lack of medical infrastructure, and much the same can be said of Africa, Central America and many other places.

If fixing this was as simple as putting people in saunas, or even just shutting off the AC, don’t you think it would have been resolved by now? Just go take a sauna...

Given the massive real estate bubble and now this which is both hugely slowing production in the short term and speeding up the decampment from China of lots of Western businesses, I wonder how long before the bubble bursts. It is huge - far far bigger than we had in 2007.

Well, there is sometime about Colds and flu: Why do they strike in winter? Cold air affects our first line of defense...

However, this not about treatment, but transmission.

What does anyone get out of tyranny? What’s the payoff? I must be missing something.

The people on top get to boss the people on bottom around. That is what they get out of it.

And there are people who support it because they like to see other people bossed around. They don't care that their face may be ground in the dirt as long as they can see your face in the dirt with a jackboot on your neck. In fact they will do things that will in the long run hurt themselves just to see it.

People are weird.
