California's governor signed a bill last week that allows state residents to switch their party affiliation on election day, a change expected to increase primary election participation.
The San Francisco Chronicle reported that Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) signed the bill Thursday, allowing voters to fill out a short form at any point in the last two weeks before an election including the day itself declaring their party affiliation.
The bill ensures that a resident may vote in their intended party's primary even if they miss the official registration deadline, presuming that their application is accepted by county officials.
California's embrace of conditional voter registration for the general election in 2018 led to historic midterm turnout in the state during an election that saw the number of GOP House members in the state's 53-member congressional delegation fall to single digits.

Just get rid of elections. They’re so messy.
The Governor’s mansion must have lead pipes.
That’s exactly what they want. They want a dictator.
Because California doesn’t have enough ways to commit voter fraud.
I just got an email from Yolo county Republicans discussing the vote harvesting and some steps they are taking to combat the massive fraud. Record turn-out—yeah, right. Massive vote harvesting, overturning some elections that Republicans had won.
California is becoming more and more of a dictatorship. Our right to vote is being eliminated, and our other rights are not far behind.
Active military, I’ve voted in CA elections no matter where I’ve been stationed.
I thought they had done just that in California.
You better believe that has become the Democrat Party way of thinking.
The ideal situation would be for the Party to pick the candidates and the “election” would be a mere rubber stamp.
Vote Republican on the primary day and Democrat in the General Election. What could go wrong?
“...California is becoming more and more of a dictatorship...”
Newsom and his ilk are lawless MARXISTS. Not new, and widely known in this one-party totalitarian state.
I received a ballot informative that says I can vote any where in the state. I dont have to go to my regular polling place. This election is going to be a criminal level joke.
Some comments would be helpful
The cheaters will vote for the worst Republican in the morning, change their affiliation, and then vote for their dream Democrat in the afternoon.
It also helps to get candidates that tell it like it is, unashamed to be conservative and outspoken, and not wishy washy hold back because they are afraid to alienate and lose votes.
Doesnt seem like a big deal. We dont have party registration in Texas at all. The only real rules are that you can only vote in one partys primary in a given year, you have to sign a declaration immediately before voting that you are part of that party, and if you sign a petition for a candidate, you can only vote in that candidates partys primary.
So Democrats register as Republicans during the primary and vote for the weakest Republican on the ticket.
Then they switch to being Dems again on election day and vote against the primary loser they set up.
Two can play that game!!
If you cannot win on ideas; cheat and change the rules to maximize to your benefit, right Libs?
Our side better get our side vote harvesting this election it seems Ronna at the RNC was caught with her pants down AND lost the house because of it!!!
This whole thread is misleading. In California, anyone registered as “Decline to State” is sent a form allowing you to choose a particular party for the upcoming primary election. I happened to choose Democrat (gotta have some fun!), as opposed to Green or some other minor party. Note that Republican was not among the choices.
As far as the actual ballot is concerned, the only difference between a “DTS” ballot and a “Crossover” ballot is that you get to vote for the Presidential candidate from that party. The sample Democrat ballot I got in the mail also showed an election for the state Democrat Politburo, but this was not on my actual ballot.
For the last couple elections, all primary votes outside President are essentially non-partisan. Everyone gets the same ballot for U.S. Senate, U.S. Congress and all of the state, county and local offices. The top two vote-getters in each race, regardless of party, advance to the final election in November. Although some of the local and county elections, if one candidate gets more than 50% of the vote, there is no runoff for that post.
