The French prefer a deal with the Germans to cordial cross-channel relations with Britain. That much is certain.

So Boris is trying to engage the Chinese instead of the E.U. which is a mistake. He should engage the U.S. instead.

Trump has already brokered a pre deal with UK... and part was to deal with China...

Giving trump additional leverage...

Looks to me like Boris is effing up the whole thing up. The good news is that China is also getting mad at him for holding opinions that are inconvenient for them on Hong Kong.

I don’t think I will ever understand people who hop straight to the zero sum games and assured mutual destruction when there is a great deal of mutually beneficially stuff left unconsidered on the table.

Britain & France have been going at this for centuries, haven’t they?

The rest of the EU runs a trade surplus with Britain. As we’ve seen with China and the US, the side that runs a big surplus stands to lose more and has less leverage. The only question is if Boris will have the balls Trump has shown and start slapping ever higher tariffs on EU goods until they decide to start being reasonable.

The Eastern Europeans have been pretty smart. They don’t have the same romantic view of the EU Yurps (western European elites) have. Between structural funds for infrastructure projects and the agriculture subsidy, they are receiving a decent chunk of money from the EU every year. Also their citizens can go get higher paying jobs in Western Europe. For so long as they continue to benefit economically, they will stay in.

BUT

They will not let the Yurps bully them on lots of important issues like bathroom confusion, open borders (ie muslim invasion), etc.

If the flow of money from Brussels ever stops, they’ll tell the Yurps to go screw themselves the next day.

What? No time out for the fashionable mistresses? What’s a sex farce without a romp with the fashionable mistresses?

What’s this world coming to?

I understand that the French Fishing fleet depend upon access to a rich area controlled by the UK.

Gonna be interesting to see how that is handled.
