Maryland school district revamps U.S. history curriculum after reviewing how topics like slavery are taught

A school district in Maryland revamped its eighth grade U.S. history curriculum after reviewing how it approached topics like slavery. Eighth graders at Montgomery County Public Schools, one of the largest districts in the nation, now mostly use primary sources like letters and speeches to learn about U.S. history, instead of relying on textbooks alone.

"It was really important to us to make sure that we are telling an inclusive narrative of American history," said Tiferet Ani, social studies curriculum specialist. "And so to get away from sort of the dominant narrative that's focused on presidents, on generals, you know, the political history."

The district's curriculum now includes a unit on "stolen labor." Students also look at how and why the constitution protected slavery and have lessons where they rewrite portions of their textbooks. It's being used in Salvatore Assenza's eighth-grade class at Roberto W. Clemente Middle School.

"We as America, we did this," one student said in a class discussion about slavery. "We are guilty of it."

"For people who look at this part of our history and go, but it's over you know and everyone's equal now, do you guys feel that way?"

"No," a student named Sophia said. "Because, yes there was racism before, but there's still remaining bits of it. It's better than before yes, but it's still bad."

"I think it has changed how we study history because we look at history through a white, particularly male, American lens," said student Ava Milisits. "I feel like learning through this lens basically tells the whole story of America, about how slavery is the root and the foundation of America and its history."

Elizabeth Newton, another student, said, "We're learning how to be really, really analytical thinkers. … Really trying to discover for ourselves like the truth."

Let me guess: they also ensure they use the new PC term “enslaved laborers” for “slaves”.

Figures it would be Monty Co. They pitched their Southern statues and are a sanctuary county, full of limo libs mostly beholden to the Federal dollar.

“Tiferet Ani, social studies curriculum specialist”.

“... in Salvatore Assenza’s eighth-grade class”

Interesting names.

All engaged in doing anything to bring down America. Hate-America-First-&-Most.

The joys of communist indoctrination! Eliminate all government schools and the communist tools who teach/indoctrinate the government’s children...

Jail should be considered for the birth parents who have abused these children by committing them to these asylums...

I.never understand why, we never get any credit for ending slaVery. The way these liberals talk, it as if we still have vestiges of slavery which need to be eradicated.

And some such as Mr. Global warming, Tom Steyer, bring up reparations in a presidential debate.

We never get credit for ending slaVery, and seldom.does anyone give credit to people of faith for their work .

I doubt that. You are learning to regurgitate what the Leftists in control of Montgomery County want you to think.

Is anyone else just a little curious about a person named Tiferet Ani determining how U. S. hisitory will be taught in the United States?

Yeah, slavery was at the root of the founding of our nation.

Boy, these folks have no grasp of reality, and here they are destroying the ability of our children to respect our nation.

This is more of the Left’s effort to take this nation down by any means possible.

If they truly were analytical thinkers, they’d be up in arms against these people skewing the history of our nation.

The nation is the zenith of human civilization, and these ‘criminals’ are trying to destroy respect for it.

This is a criminal enterprise.

This constant focus on where blacks “were” keeps them from seeing where they actually “are” today and where they are headed for the future. You can’t drive your car safely by looking only in the rear-view mirror. Black History month is a rear-view mirror. Slavery this and slavery that is a rear-view mirror. Both are liberal mind-traps to keep blacks angry and constantly in a victimized form of mind. We are not our grandparents but only who WE are TODAY. It is time that blacks understand that they hold the key to whatever their lives are and where they want to go with it. Can’t do it by looking backwards all of the time.

The person has proven themselves to be of the ilk I address.

I don’t care if her name is Jill Smith if she’s going to trash this nation like that.

If she can’t respect my homeland, she sure as hell isn’t getting any respect from me.

I’ll GO THERE every time I see this s—t.

“We as America, we did this,” one student said in a class discussion about slavery. “We are guilty of it.”

Nope. That might be true if a blind eye had been turned to it and it was supported by a majority. But that is not the case at all.

A disturbing reflection on what Facebook users know about history is found in the responses to a question on the Facebook site Do You Remember: The '50's. The question was, "what do you think is the saddest death in the history of the '50's?" Dozens of posters cited the assassination of John F. Kennedy, a few mentioned Robert F. Kennedy's murder, and one even cited the sinking of the Titanic. Of course, none of these events took place in the 1950's.

By the way, I cited the deaths of Sen. Robert A. Taft and Secretary of State John Foster Dulles.
