TEHRAN Iran's health ministry raised Sunday the death toll from the new virus to 8 people in the Middle Eastern country, amid concerns that clusters there, as well as in Italy and South Korea, could signal a serious new stage in its global spread.
Health ministry spokesman Kianoush Jahanpour told state TV that there were now 43 confirmed cases of the illness in Iran.
The outbreak in Iran has centered on the holy city of Qom, where officials say travellers from China brought the new coronavirus.
Iran reported its first case of the virus last Wednesday.
Jahanpour added that the 15 newly confirmed cases included 7 in Qom, four in the capital, Tehran, two in the northern Gilan province, one in the central Markazi province, and one from town of Tonekabon in the northern Mazandaran province, who died of the illness.

“Meanwhile, the death toll from the common flu continues without media coverage.”
How many cities/countries have been shut down due to the common flu this year, or any year? We react to what we see, and really don’t let the media dictate what we believe.
Meanwhile, the ordinary flu virus in Virginia alone in one season :
The influenza B strain of the flu has been the predominant type of virus in Virginia in the past week, making up 68 percent of the cases. The Virginia Department of Health has received report of 442 pneumonia and influenza-associated deaths during the 2019-20 flu season.
Governments aren’t reacting to the virus, politicians are reacting to public alarm caused by media coverage. [As they always do.]
Ask yourself who benefits if the economy temporarily slows down because this is driven not by a bug, but by someone wanting to use panic to damage the global economy or at a minimum to slow investment at least through the election season. A slowdown in the global economy, for example, would bring a drop in the price of oil; a drop in the price of oil would make US oil production less profitable because it costs more to extract it here than it does in Russia and the Middle East.
180,000 Americans were hospitalized in the US because of the ordinary flu [which has never been a laughing matter] and about 10,000 have died this season because of the flu in the US alone.
When 10,000 or even half that number of Americans are killed by this bug this year, then be concerned.
This panic should remind people of the 2008 panic that put Obama in the White House and enabled the left to eliminate thousands of car dealerships and profit from bailouts.
“Governments arent reacting to the virus, politicians are reacting to public alarm caused by media coverage. [As they always do.]”
Seriously, in China, as if they have an independent media causing panic, or even have an open Internet so the people in Wuhan can get outside information? For heaven’s sake, they were LOCKING UP people who tried raise an alarm in the first 2 months of the outbreak.
Sorry, that line doesn’t work here. Try it somewhere else.
All I can say is, so much for the conspiracy theory that this virus was bioengineered to be deadly only to ethnic Han Chinese.
