Bringing a New Vibe to the Classroom. Some educators are experimenting with their approaches to teaching to make course materials more relevant to various cultures and communities.

In high schools across the country, there have traditionally been a set of curriculum guidelines that teachers are hesitant to disturb.

But as the population in the United States becomes more ethnically and racially diverse, re-educating teachers about how to be aware of the cultural differences in their communities has been gaining traction.

Some educators are experimenting with new approaches of teaching to motivate students and to examine concepts like racism, social justice, inequality and discrimination. These teachers are reimagining and shifting conventional curriculums to reflect their more diverse student bodies.

At the forefront are teachers like Christopher Emdin, 40, a science educator and the author of “For White Folks Who Teach in the Hood … and the Rest of Y’all Too.” He has been a leader in the #HipHopEd initiative, which integrates urban youth culture with learning. The Science Genius program, for example, uses hip-hop music and rhymes in teaching science.

Mr. Emdin — who said he did not like school growing up — co-founded an initiative in 2012 with the rapper GZA to use hip-hop to teach science in 10 New York City public schools. It is about “remixing education,” he said.

...

Teaching Tolerance, the education arm of the Southern Poverty Law Center, has produced social justice teaching standards that many teachers are using, from kindergarten through high school, to guide curriculum development.

“We are beginning to address race and racism explicitly in the classroom,” said Lecia Brooks, a former teacher and a member of the senior leadership team of the Southern Poverty Law Center. “We are letting go of the false notion that it is too heavy, too much for children to talk about it head on.”

The change has been gradual. One factor: Teachers are still predominantly white

Great, teach blacks and Hispanics to resent whites, using SPLC propaganda. Notice how the article targets white female teachers. As Democrats blame them for racial disparities, Republicans should appeal for their votes. Bush did the opposite when he maligned teachers when he said the "soft bigotry of low expectations" is responsible for racial achievement gaps.

The books by Emdin has mostly good reviews on Amazon, but here is a negative one:

"Preposterous accusation of white educators perpetrating inadequate pedagogy based on absolute stupidity. Ridiculous. Also, trying to draw parallels with indigenous people where there is little to none is also ludicrous. I teach in a school where the majority of the students are truly violent and victims of socioeconomic hardships as well as subjected to witnessing drugs, alcoholism, flagrant sexual immorality, and violence. My students are lower elementary and are already extremely hostile, yelling, hitting, throwing things including furniture, saying the most vulgar things, choking others, stabbing with pencils, etc. This is every day and the majority of the students act this way, not only a few. I try to teach them how to respect each other and themselves, the golden rule, etc. This does not mean I am trying to make them “act white”, it means that I am teaching them to be kind, respectful, and responsible human beings."

ANOTHER REASON TO HOMESCHOOL

This ping list is for the other articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)

The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.

There are many reasons for the on-going failure of public schools. Two of them have been teaching to minority students and letting the kids determine what they believe is important to learn.

All efforts have failed to close the minority education gap and all other fixes will fail.

ADULTS are the TEACHERS. CHILDREN are the STUDENTS.

Stop pandering to the lowest common denominator and have TEACHERS act like the ADULTS.

How about regaining control and discipline in classroom whatever it takes to do that. Until that happens, nobody is going to teach them a damn thing. Of course, that will never happen given the “politically correct” liberal views of discipline these days. In the old days, those that were truly uncontrollable were sent to a “reform school”.
Then, those that show a modicum of desire to learn, how about just teaching them some good, old-fashion reading, writing, spelling, arithmetic etc., and leave all that communist SJW propaganda crap to hell out? Teach them something useful that will help them become functioning members of society. Those that don’t want to learn, send em to “reform school”. Like everything they touch, liberals have destroyed the public education system.

One of the prime axioms of the multiverse is that if the NYT likes it, it will never, ever work.

The second axiom is if the New York Times reports any school has closed the white-minority education gap you know a year later we will learn the school in question is involved in fraud to manipulate test scores and graduation rates.

Apparently classrooms aren’t enough of a circus yet.

I wonder when “educators” are going to get around to actually teaching.

“Ms. Germán’s ninth-grade students, for example, study graffiti and debate questions such as: Is it vandalism? Where does it come from? What does it mean? What does it contribute to society? Does it count as text? Is there a message there?”

Is it vandalism? To deface anothers property? I guess the way they are teaching them.... they will be expressing their art and “contributing to society” on our cars soon... after they run out of walls.....

Maybe the kids could paint graffiti all over Ms German’s car. Then she might have a better perspective as to whether it is art or vandalism.

How long before “educators” start discussing the people who poop all over SF, leaving needles and other garbage in their wake? Are they leaving a “message”, too, that must be deconstructed? Will students be coerced into approving of this method to reach the bourgeois capitalists?

An evil equivalency has been made by leftists, equating race and culture, that if you disapprove of a certain culture, you’re disrespecting the race.

For instance, if you malign the “thug culture” perpetuated by those who love “Gansta Rap,” then you’re maligning the Black race, and trying to force Black youth to “act White.”

This is a weapon of those who wish to keep the races at eachothers’ throats, and ensure their own elevated place in society.

Those who claim that all cultures are equally valid are liars and race-pimps, who actually want to keep “minorities” as victims, rather than allowing the members of the race to become successful, because it will allow them to keep their power over their “subjects.”
