Florida Lawmakers Condemn Bernie Sanders Over Castro Comments

Florida lawmakers on both sides of the aisle are speaking out to condemn Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders' comments about former Cuban leader Fidel Castro.

During an interview with the CBS news program 60 Minutes on Sunday, the Democratic presidential nominee was questioned about comments he made in the 1980s about the former communist leader, who died in 2016 after stepping down a decade prior.

“We’re very opposed to the authoritarian nature of Cuba, but you know, it’s unfair to simply say everything is bad,” Sanders told Anderson Cooper. “When Fidel Castro came into office, you know what he did? He had a massive literacy program. Is that a bad thing? Even though Fidel Castro did it?"

Sanders was also asked why he thought the Cuban people didn't rise up and help the U.S. overthrow Castro.

"...He educated their kids, gave them health care, totally transformed the society, you know?" Sanders said.

On Monday, Florida's Republican and Democratic lawmakers spoke out against Sanders' comments, including Republican Sen. Marco Rubio, a Cuban-American from Miami.

"Likely Dem nominee praised the supposed 'achievements” [of] Castro regime," Rubio tweeted. "He’s wrong about why people didn’t overthrow Castro. It’s not because 'he educated their kids, gave them health care' it‘s because his opponents were jailed, murdered or exiled."

Democratic Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell called Sanders' comments "absolutely unacceptable."

"The Castro regime murdered and jailed dissidents, and caused unspeakable harm to too many South Florida families. To this day, it remains an authoritarian regime that oppresses its people, subverts the free press, and stifles a free society," Mucarsel-Powell tweeted.

Bernie was looking for anything to try and prop up Castro and make Castro, and thus by extension, socialism and central planning, look good.

What next will Bernie say, that Ted Bundy was a good law student?

Secondly, Cuba was literate to a large degree before Castro and Bernie has never proven that Cuba had to have Castro to become more literate.

I like what Watters said on Fox News that basically Castro wanted more literacy to allow kids to read the socialist propaganda he sought to pup into them.

...on Sunday, the Democratic presidential nominee was questioned...

Well now; there's a real gem of unchecked reporteration! I think there are miles to go before that can truthfully and realistically be said, don't you?

As anyone who has read Hemingway’s “The Old Man and the Sea” could attest, the “old man”, Santiago, and his protege, “the boy”, Manolin, could read the newspaper. The old man read the newspaper and was able to relay to the boy how the Yankees of New York, led by the great Dimaggio, had fared on any given day. In the story, these were LESS than common people, and they could read and discuss the meaning of what they’d read.

And this novella was set in the early 1950s — BEFORE any communists had taken over the island and its culture.

you folks better read up on your socialism so you know what you are voting for. In socialism the government owns all and takes a huge chunk of what you make and you get back what they think you need.

There is no incentive to get ahead because everything in excess of what other people think you need is taken away and given to those who don’t and won’t work and produce.

That is socialism.

Good. Sucking up to Communists should be as socially and politically unacceptable as sucking up to Nazis.

The DEMs have successfully convinced a good number of voters that the “rich” GOP voters have too much money and are purposely keeping it from them.

The idiots all think they will be on the receiving end, not the giving end. Reality is going to suck when they find out that’s not how it works.
