A new case of novel coronavirus in Northern California is suspected to be the first known incident of person-to-person transmission in the general public in United States, officials said Wednesday. The California Department of Health said the individual is from Solano County and is receiving medical care at UC Davis Medical Center.

Its from China
COVID-19 appears areosolized. It spreads through the atmosphere. If thats the case, containment efforts provide a false sense of security.
It keeps on spreading faster than humans can check it.
Unknown origin. Maybe it spreads from reading repeated news about the virus.
What’s frustrating is that I read that they wanted to test this patient a week ago and the CDC refused.
Even if they kept him relatively quarantined, that’s a week that was lost contact tracing and identifying people who were exposed.
I realize the CDC has a balancing act, and doesn’t want to waste tests, but China is testing tens of thousands, how is it we have only tested 442? Why can’t we get test kits out that work?
UC Davis Hospital treated some of the infected cruise ship passengers.
This new person likely went into UC Davis Hospital and got the COVID-19 there.
As long as our test kits don’t work, we will have no confirmed cases.
OK, so maybe that sounds cynical.
Heck, maybe it is cynical.
Maybe not...
Sorry didn’t see previous post. However, how did UC Davis conduct the tests on the patient. My understanding at this time ONLY CDC facilities can test for the coronavirus.
Is UC Davis a CDC facility?
It will be 16 before it’s over :)
Some FReepers are already on a hilltop staring to the sky hoping they’ll be one of the 144,000 :)
If that’s the real number i’m in a LOT of trouble!
Possibly the virus came in through our southern border or over on a ship.
You hoping for a cancellation on one of those 144 thou spots? :)
Don’t know for sure but it is rumored that the patient was first at Kaiser and then moved to UC Davis.
I hope it’s not something so stupid as someone putting reporting numbers above human lives. Or worse someone hoping for the virus to spread to hurt Trump.
The cases will show up in another week anyway, when people end up in hospitals with pneumonia and ground glass lungs are seen in the xrays.
But the opportunity to limit the spread, to track contacts and even to protect medical workers has been lost.
They were transferred to UC Davis from another hospital, so no they didnt get it from UC Davis. Id be more worried about how many were exposed at the other hospital.
WHOEVER GETS THIS FIRST AND KNOWS HOW TO POST A THREAD...

The CDC sent out test kits to the states that received patients for quarantine...so the CA health dept. can do testing w/o sending a specimen to Atlanta...but there was “bad” reagent sent in the kits sent to some other states & countries...so the CDC is re-sending kits:
What makes you think that the person had COVID-19 when he transferred to UC Davis?
The CDC didn't think that he had COVID-19 when he arrived from the other hospital. I think it's more likely that he was suffering from complications of the Flu when he transferred to UC Davis. Then got COVID-19 there.
Flu: 291,000 to 646,000 deaths worldwide; 12,000 to 61,000 deaths in the U.S. per year.
