CNN spent a good chunk of time doing the math to come up with a bottom-line figure for all of Bernie Sanders' proposals -- not just "Medicare for All" but the Green New Deal, free college, universal pre-K and child care, and so on. The total? An estimated $50 trillion.
This week, he released fact sheets explaining how he'd pay for them -- or rather, how he'd raise $44 trillion in taxes to pay for them.
Take a look at the Medicare for All portion in the chart below. You'll see that some of the money comes from rolling back the 2017 Republican tax cuts, some comes from new taxes on the rich and some is from capital gains taxes. But some also comes from collecting money that employers and individuals currently pay to private insurers -- that is, trading premiums for higher taxes.
Friendly assumptions. For this little experiment, CNN gave him Medicare for All at the bargain basement price of $27 trillion -- current national health spending that would be ported over to federal spending -- over 10 years. That's a steep discount off an estimate from the Urban Institute and does not include $7 trillion in new national health spending. But whatever.

I accept what you say but I also harbor no trust that Bernie in his frustration will defy that and seek to impose his will on all of us
And all of the deep state actors will spring up like Mushrooms in the manure and follow along
Interesting times
Sic Semper Tyrranis!
The first outcome of this New Green Deal is a much DIMINISHED level of economic activity in this country.
The proposed revenue stream TO the government could not, would not, materialize, because regardless of the tax rates, the economic activity would be so slowed as to make it mathematically impossible to collect the revenue. Paradoxically (or perhaps not so much of a paradox), higher tax rates lead to lowered tax revenue, social justice be damned.
The goose that lays the golden eggs may only do so if kept well nourished and assured of continued good health. Murdering the goose to cut it open and determine how to make the golden eggs is a sure way to end that source altogether.
In Canada, its paid for through general taxes and they take like 90% of personal income just to pay for health care.
And even then its not fully comprehensive.
Millennials meed to be constantly reminded that THEY will pay tor it all, with every Form 1040, every year, for the rest of their working lives.
Agree totally, but critical thinking skills and basic analysis like you provide “disturb” the true believers
Snowflakes looking for a handout so the party can keep on truckin
Then the lights go out and Fearless Leader tells you to get into the fields and dig a hole, drop in a seed, cover it up and water it...
But wait, machines can do that
Well, I guess you are excess and need to die and reduce the “surplus population”
Sucks to be You!
Love the logic in your post, you are awake!
We the people will pay. As if socialism doesn’t cost us enough already.
“Medicare for All at the bargain basement price of $27 trillion”
You and I might get sick because of Bernie, but most of America won’t.
You’re paying now (and so are your employers) when the feckless get sick.
Berniecare is supposed to add dental benefits and universal custodial care. Those will cost more, lots more.
Let’s say ole Bernie wins the election. Anyone want to predict when Soros stops taking his phone calls. At the risk of being crass, I recall an old antonym, PDQ and I believe that would be how fast Bern would be cut loose to drift.
“Green New Deal $16.3T”
Bernie isn’t the only one of the Democratic contenders that is “green”.
As far as I know, only Bloomberg is less crazy on the subject. And Bloomberg’s less radical plans might get passed more easily by Congress.
And many of you have the misfortune of living in ‘rat-run states that think that changes in the USA can counteract the effect of CO2 production in China.
“Medicare for All” isn’t the same thing as Medicare for all.
Democratic focus groups have added every bell and whistle they could think of, including adult dental care and universal custodial care.
If you’ve seen your health insurance premiums go up four-fold, it’s in large part because of Democratic focus groups.
Taxing the “rich” is like herding cats.
Only the stupid ones stick around in a straight line!
“Millennials meed to be constantly reminded that THEY will pay tor it all, with every Form 1040, every year, for the rest of their working lives.”
The Democrats have learned to hide the grasping hands of governments quite well.
If you look at a house, you might see bricks or vinyl siding, but the health care system takes about as much out of your house payments as the building materials industry.
A commie wannabe at the moment; he hasn't started the killing yet.
Canadian taxation is about as oppressive as US taxation in total.
The Canadians toss more tax money towards health care and less towards defense.
The schools should be required to teach the truth about socialism/communism. From each according to his ability, to each according to his need sounds really fair to kids...but they don’t teach you that a faceless bureaucrat gets to decide what you need and what you are required to contribute.
Maybe it costs less in absolute dollar terms (but usually it's more), but you get much, much, much less for your dollar.
