A total of 6.3 million Afghan refugees were hosted in Pakistan and Iran by 1990. As of 2013, Afghanistan was the largest refugee-producing country in the world, a title held for 32 years. Afghans are currently the second largest refugee group after Syrian refugees. The majority of Afghan refugees (95%) are located in Iran and Pakistan. Some countries that were part of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) took in small number of Afghans that worked with their respective forces. Ethnic minorities, like Afghan Sikhs and Hindus, often fled to India.

Islam in Afghanistan began to be practiced after the Arab Islamic conquest of Afghanistan from the 7th to the 10th centuries, with the last holdouts to conversion submitting in the late 19th century. Islam is the official state religion of Afghanistan.

So when you consider that 99.7% of the Afghan people have been confirmed muslim for so many years and a majority of the Afghan people that have immigrated have gone to muslim countries and fit in like Iran, Syria, and Pakistan, then you have to consider them muslim in practice or they wouldn’t have fit in. And trying to change the UK is an example of their trying to take control of another country.

I never said they weren’t muslim. They’re pretty hard-core muslim. They’re bad-asses and muslims. When I was training for Peace Corps there, we were told that the local mullah would be firmly against anything we might be for in improving life, whether it be vaccinations against small pox (it was that long ago), digging a well for clean water, or encouraging kids to go to school.

Their national sport is buzkashi. It’s kind of like polo—except it is played with the carcass of a dead goat or calf. The horses are trained to bite opposing players, whips are allowed, but the use of knives was outlawed several decades ago. As I said—they are bad asses.

Going in there with any intention to stay for any extended length of time was a mistake and it is good we are getting out. Hopefully in weeks rather than months.
