[Virginia] RPV rules related to crossover primary voting
The Bull Elephant ^ | 3/1/2020 | Jeanine Martin

Many Republicans across the state intend to vote in the Democrat primary on Super Tuesday, with the majority voting for Bernie Sanders. They believe he would not only be the most likely candidate for President Trump to beat in Virginia, Bernie would also be the most harmful to Democrat candidates down-ballot, in particular, the new Democrat Congresswomen in our 2nd and 5th Congressional districts. They would be impacted negatively by a Trump win in Virginia and give Republicans a chance to reclaim those seats.

...

Earlier today I asked Christ Marston, Legal Counsel of the Republican Party of Virginia, what the consequences would be for Republicans who intend to crossover and vote in the Democrat primary on Tuesday. His response:

Under the Party Plan, anyone who participates in another party’s nominating contest is barred from participating in our Party-run nominating processes for a period of 5 years.

The Plan does allow someone who participates in another party’s nominating process to sign a statement renouncing his or her affiliation with the other party, but that is only allowed once every five years.

As a Republican voting in Tuesday’s Democrat primary, you will be barred from participating in the Republican party nominating processes for 5 years unless you sign a state renouncing any affiliation with the Democrat party. The form:

Hoping to clear up some argument as to whether you should participate in "Operation Chaos".

Here it is direct from the horse's mouth exactly what the score is regarding voting in the Dem primary and eligibility for GOP party participation.

Unenforceable.
When I go in to vote in the June primary for 7th District no one will deny me a ballot.

No such restrictions in Open Primary states, such as Texas is. Check whether your state is an Open Primary state.

It is enforceable within the party itself.

We do not register by party in Virginia and I have participated in primaries of both parties.

Are voters registered by party there?
We do not do that in Georgia.

This refers to participating in the GOP units, being voting unit members, sitting on committees, being delegates to conventions, and so on.

It is strongly preferable that all Republicans participate in the GOP itself, to participating in the Dem primary. This is what VA Republicans should be paying attention to:

No, but if only the Dems are voting in this election, and the person casts the vote in the election, it’s conclusively participation in the other party’s process and triggers disqualification within the GOP.

More dumb moves by the local GOP. These are the same people who left 30 seats uncontested in the last election. I really don’t care all that much about their rules.

In open primary states, there is zero advantage to registering with a political party, UNLESS that individual is planning to run for office or desires to hold a position within the party. Some states no longer have party registration at all.

Of course, this stupid plan does not stop the GOP establishment thatr7ns the RPV from backstabbing their own republican candidates if they are conservatives like Cucinelli and supporting the Democrat opponent.

Is is not a dumb rule. It is not even a rule at all. At least for now, as a citizen of the Commonwealth of Virginia, I am not registered in any party. I can vote in any primary I want but not both. No penalty.

That lawyer was deceptive, but what’s new?

Agree and I have too. The only thing we can't do in Virginia is vote in both primaries.

It would be far more effective, if not as emotionally satisfying, to have every Republican who wants to chaos the Dems working with GOP unit committees instead.

Besides, what LG Fairfax just did puts the VA Dems full up on chaos already: https://twitter.com/FairfaxJustin/status/1234294479563128834
