It may be that the association between ‘laughing-stock’ and the practice of ridiculing people in the stocks grew over time. There’s no reference to that in any of the early citations of the phrase though, and it seems clear that isn’t the way the phrase originated.

I am pleased for the left to be clueless. Let them keep wasting their money on bad candidates with bad ideas. Perhaps running for Chief Executive without benefit of any significant executive experience was a bad idea.
But it does not seem to be holding back Sanders, who was mayor of the small (pop. in the 40k range), almost all white town of Burlington, VT during the 1980s. Sanders is a lifelong piddler and leftist legislator with less executive experience than Buttigieg. So maybe Democrats really are sexist, homophobic pigs.
It was incurable, unchangeable sexism without remedy or any hope for one in the infinite future, so her supporters should give up. They’re too old to change that anyway.
