DHS Secretary Chad Wolf Approves 35K H-2B Foreign Workers to Take U.S. Jobs
Breitbart ^ | 5 Mar 2020 | JOHN BINDER

Acting Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Chad Wolf announced he will allow American businesses to import an additional 35,000 foreign workers to take non-agricultural jobs through the H-2B visa program.

Every year, U.S. companies are allowed to import 66,000 low-skilled H-2B foreign workers to take blue-collar, non-agricultural jobs. For some time, the H-2B visa program has been used by businesses to bring in cheaper, foreign workers and has contributed to blue-collar Americans having their wages undercut.

On Thursday, Wolf confirmed that DHS will ensure American businesses can hire an additional 35,000 H-2B foreign visa workers for non-agricultural jobs in the fishing, construction, hospitality, and restaurant industries.

Wolf said of the extra 35,000 foreign workers that 10,000 will be from Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras “to stem the flow of illegal migration in the region and encourage lawful migration to the U.S.”

The decision to add more foreign workers to the already inflated U.S. labor market, Wolf said, is “intended” to benefit American businesses and American workers, though the latter was not explained. [...]

This is the fourth consecutive year that President Trump’s DHS has approved more foreign workers to be imported by American businesses through the H-2B visa program. Wolf’s decision follows the same direction that former DHS Secretaries Kevin McAleenan, Kirstjen Nielsen, and John Kelly implemented.

Wolf’s announcement comes with new measures to “reduce fraud and abuse” in the H-2B visa program, which a handful of Republican and Democrat senators have warned against expanding.

The H-2B visa program has been widely used by businesses to drag down the wages of American workers in landscaping, conservation work, the meatpacking industry, the construction industry, and fishing jobs, a 2019 study from the Center for Immigration Studies finds. [...]

Look I’m a contractor out here in California and I’ll say it flat out - white kids don’t want to work!

They’re mostly spoiled Liberal brats That think everything should be handed to them

Nearly 100% of my employees over the past 20 years have been Spanish-speaking and not just Mexicans - currently I have two Cubans working for me

I’m sorry but it’s true

Same goes for black folks - they don’t want to work either

My projects ain’t no affirmative action nonsense - the work actually has to get done. And it won’t happen by itself

So we’re importing people to “encourage lawful migration to the U.S.”? WTF!

The Trump Organization depends on H-2Bs. Did you honestly think that the program would be cut back?

There are plenty of Spanish-speaking American citizens - by all means hire them.

So we’re importing people to “encourage lawful migration to the U.S.”? WTF!

By that logic, we should open the borders - then no more immigration will be illegal. Feel the Bern!

Nobody in the US seems to want to do construction or fruit picking or other seasonal work - I have family in construction, and while they’d love to hire American, the unskilled people who should be applying for these unskilled jobs simply aren’t...they’re living on crime, girlfriends, or state bennies of some kind.

So these businesses can’t hire anybody and they’re way behind on jobs.

At least the Mexicans and Central Americans who got these jobs showed up, did their jobs, accepted orders from the boss, and in some cases ended up as foremen because they were willing to start at the bottom. They’re no cheaper than Americans... they’re paid a decent wage, and any American could live on it. (And btw,, these seasonal workers are living 4 to a room, sharing a beat up old car, and saving most of the money to send home.)

We used to have a better policy on short term seasonal labor, but it was killed by the unions.

So that should be the new American standard of living?

Americans don't want to work. 80K truck driver shortage. IT shortage, etc.

EBT/SNAP has made too many sitting on the porch. Too many porch monkeys.

IT shortage

GOPe corporate globalist fiction; the fact is that there are 3.5 million under- or unemployed Americans with STEM degrees.

If laborer positions aren't being filled by Americans, that means a market wage is not being offered. Allow the American labor market to work: as wages rise, there is more incentive to, for example, spend less time between jobs and postpone retirement. (No, those nearing retirement will not be doing construction labor, but labor is at least partially fungible: near-retirees taking jobs they can do frees up more able-bodied workers for the jobs only they can do.) If end customers won't pay the price needed to supply the free-market wage, that's the market saying that the labor purchaser needs to go out of business, freeing up resources for more efficient competitors or markets. Inefficient producers want cheap-labor socialism to protect them from the free market.

Yep, this benefits the construction, hospitality, and restaurant industries. Similar approvals for the past four years.
