Human lab rats needed: Would you get infected with coronavirus for $4,500?

Are you sick of being healthy? Would you like to experience the coronavirus firsthand?

Look no further than the Queen Mary BioEnterprises Innovation Centre in London, which is looking for 24 volunteers to inject with the dreaded coronavirus and participate in their flu camp.

They will be paid about $4,588 for their troubles.

This isn’t the latest twisted Stephen King novel. Rather, it’s an attempt by medical research and development company Hvivo to create a vaccine for the deadly disease which has killed more than 3,800 across the globe.

The human guinea pigs — who will receive a battery of tests before being selected — will be given two of the virus’ weaker strains, 0C43 and 229E, which should cause mild respiratory symptoms. They will then be given new or existing vaccines.

I’d do it if it were local.

Be easy to find a list of volunteers among the “impervious” I’ve seen all over these threads for weeks.

No.

But if they had asked me 35 years ago when I was young, healthy and needed a few extra bucks, I probably would have.

The definition of vaccine is being infected with a teeny bit of the virus, hello.

I’m not a medical expert - but wouldn’t you give the vaccine first, then inject them with the virus to see if the vaccine worked? This seems to be backwards as described in the article.

In London, I’d be more concerned about Islamovirus.

I’d do it if it were local....

....but only for 100x that pittance of a stipend.

I’m in good health and a non-smoker. But I’m a male, age 61. So no.

Why not just give the $4500 to some of those already infected?

Probably lazy reporting. In other studies I’ve participated in, they give you the virus but either a weakened strain or some other way debilitated. After that, they wait for symptoms to present, then test a treatment on you to see what happens.

Not for $4,500, but pay off my remaining mortgage and sign me up.

Yes, I know we have established what I am am and are now just haggling over the price.

0C43 and 229E are different coronaviruses, not simply weaker strains.

Isn't this backwards? Isn't the idea of a vaccine to protect you from the virus?

But, no. I would not do this for any amount of money. My need to remain alive exceeds my need for money.
