Will the Coronavirus Revolutionize Education?
American Thinker ^ | Sean M. Brooks

Posted on 03/12/2020 2:07:20 PM PDT by RoosterRedux

With some K-12 school districts and administrators across America panicking and attempting to get ahead of any ‘outbreak’ of the coronavirus, more districts are opting for students to stay home. I’d be willing to bet that most students thoroughly enjoy this. It’s kind of like having ‘snow days.’ However, what might be in store for these students could be far more important than a snow day, as it’s possible that the virus may herald a revolutionary shift in education.

Throughout the years, American homeschooling and online K-12 education has become far more popular and realistic than ‘brick and mortar’ public schools want to admit. School choice is disrupting and angering public school districts and officials, and school boards are voting against student vouchers so they can continue to enslave students to their school districts instead of allowing state-allocated money to travel with that student to a school of their choice. This includes online education. School districts also keep knowledge of online schools and online education far away from K-12 students and their parents, at all costs. After all, bodies in the seats mean more money for ‘brick and mortar’ school districts.

However, now that the coronavirus is causing school administrators to panic, ‘brick and mortar’ schools are encouraging students to stay home and engage in “Hybrid/Online” classes, where they communicate with their teachers online and complete online assignments and tasks at home on the internet. For most American K-12 students, this is the first time they have consistently accomplished this task at home without direct contact with the school or their classrooms, yet many of them may fail to understand that this form of online education goes on every day, throughout our country and other countries, when a virus is not in the news or infecting anyone.

No. The NEA is too powerful and school districts get money based on the number of kids who show up that day

Sean Brooks, meet the teachers’ unions. They will never allow it. Very naive article.

Yes. Schools and almost every public institution in America have long been trending toward the doctrine of CYA. They are in the process of perfecting that doctrine in the extreme this year. The least common denominator governs in all situations with respect to every threat, regardless of the level of credibility.

A lawsuit by the least common denominator who had the misfortune of enduring the worst-case scenario acts as a giant sandbag over the leadership of every institution. This is unfortunate.

What idiot, besides a democrat, thinks that these students will self-isolate and not do what they normally do outside of the classroom. They will still congregate, party, etc.

Online learning has its place but there are too many courses of study that require interaction, labs, practical application that online won’t work with.

The less time they spend in government-controlled classrooms, the smarter they’ll get.

The Democrats in our little county kept having mill levy votes every summer.

They finally got one through a couple of years ago.

They built three new elementary schools on ground that they paid twice the market price for.

Guess what?

They tell us they need more money.

They won’t sell the old schools because they’re afraid they’ll become private schools.

The high school I attended in Long Beach, Cal was heavily damaged in the earthquake of ‘33 (many years before I was born). Every student’s dream! They attended classes in army tents across the street for most of the summer.

Covid19 is the left’s new global warming.

They are using it as an issue to advance their agendas. Every libtard on all fronts will try to use it to their advantage.

To wit Nanzi tried putting in abortion funding into a emergency bill today just dealing with the virus issue.

Also in K - 5, many of the children actually have to stay with an elderly relative while the working parent is at their job. So closing could actually expose more elderly.

You don’t think they will change that criteria? They will aim to get the requirement changed based on the ‘new way of doing education.’

Never underestimate them.

“Well, if they can operate online effectively, then probably they can cut a lot of overhead expenses by keeping them online in the future.”

We have in college grand kids and great nephews/nieces from coast to coast on some type of hiatus or pending hiatus from classes.

After spring break, some will be online for the next semester. There will be more.

I have posted about a friend who has established an excellent on line MBA program.

He has been salivating about doing the same with K-12 public and private schools. Starting this fall, with maybe some test runs in some public schools after spring break.

If they can get the same federal funding per day/student for the public schools, that may start a stampede to his programs.

A retired teacher was jumping on him about how bad his plans were for society. He told her not to be an A$$hole or he would not hire her.

One of our Freepers noted that once the online public school financial toothpaste is out of the tube re public school going on line, they will never get it back into the tube.

On a similar but different area, this incredible guy feels that this virus will be the final blow to many shopping malls and even strip malls.

He says that we will order our everyday grocery stuff online and either pick it up at the store without going into the store or have it delivered to our homes. We do that now with Walmart and Raley’s/Nob Hill. Costco has us signed up for free next day delivery for a minimum of $50/delivery for sometime this year. We now get 2 day free delivery for $60

He and his wife have once a week delivery for ready to heat and eat meals. The goodies are delivered on Saturday to their homes. Several mutual friends have tried this system and love it.

So this Corona Virus might end up being a positive Black Swan event in getting rid of a lot of expensive K-12 public schools, and a lot of very expensive private colleges.

I think the panic about the virus is spreading way faster than the virus itself.
