Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton has confirmed he has coronavirus.

The Federal Government frontbencher said he felt fine but woke up with a temperature and sore throat.

"I immediately contacted the Queensland Department of Health and was subsequently tested for COVID-19," Mr Dutton said in a statement.

"I was advised by Queensland Health this afternoon that the test had returned positive.

"It is the policy of Queensland Health that anyone who tests positive is to be admitted into hospital and I have complied with their advice.

"I feel fine and will provide an update in due course."

Mr Dutton was in Sydney for a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday and returned to Brisbane on a commercial flight on the same day.

It’s big news in Australia. This is the first leading political figure to have the virus. Although he is in hospital, Dutton has sent messages saying that he feels well, aside from having a sore throat and fever.

Most people with corona recover without complications.

Looks like the entire Cabnet needs to be tested. Also he attended an NSC meeting so Chief of Defence Force and a couple of Department heads will also need testing.

That link is from the Australian Capital Territory. The article refers to a policy from Queensland. Two different jurisdictions.

But checking Queensland, their Health Department seems to be saying many people will be asked to self-isolate at home.

With a relatively small number of current cases though, it wouldn’t surprise me if they are putting everybody in hospital. Tom Hanks is in Queensland as well and he’s been hospitalised.

A couple of thoughts...

One, Dutton is a high profile patient who might require security so that might argue for hospitalization.

Second, if Dutton is presenting with some unusual symptoms, that would likely argue for it, too, I would think.
