Analysis: Trump’s virus playbook offers US vs world strategy
The Associated Press ^ | March 13, 2020 | By JILL COLVIN and COLLEEN LONG

WASHINGTON - It’s a “foreign” virus, he says — one that can be fought by closing the nation’s borders to dangerous foreigners carrying scary disease.

President Donald Trump has turned to a familiar playbook as he tries to grapple with the spiraling coronavirus outbreak, blaming immigrants for the country’s problems and casting the global health pandemic as another case of the U.S. against the world.

It’s an approach that public health officials say ignores the new reality of a situation that is fueling panic and confusion and fundamentally altering the American way of life.

But it’s business as usual for an isolationist president who once proposed barring Muslims from entering the country and has worked throughout his presidency to fortify the nation’s borders and find novel ways to keep out those he deems unworthy, diseased or unsafe.

The pattern was especially jarring during Trump’s rare Oval Office address to the nation Wednesday night. Instead of calling on Americans to lock arms with other nations to take on a common foe, Trump instead pointed the finger. He blamed Europe for fueling the virus’ continued advancement — even as the U.S. has struggled to provide basic testing, local cases skyrocket and pockets of disease increase.

Trump credited his decision to restrict travel from China for keeping the U.S. case count low and then announced he would be extending his ban to some of America’s closest allies as he took the unprecedented step of sharply restricting travel from much of Europe to the U.S.

It is a foreign virus, and by slowing the entry of infected people President Trump slowed its spread in the United States.

What is incorrect about that statement?

Oh, right, Truth over Facts.

What happens when adults are in charge:

The little boy was in panic. Milk was running all over the table and the stream was making its way toward the edge and then...began to cascade down onto mom’s newly cleaned kitchen floor. The little boy ran to get paper towels and, starting at the floor began to try to sop up the mess before mom came into the room. On hands and knees he desperately tried to end the milky torrent, but he soon realized that things were not improving. “Mom’s gonna kill me!” he thought. Without realizing, mom quietly snuck into the room from behind, picked up the tipped over gallon of milk on the table and set it right. Then walked away and let her son finish cleaning up the mess.

I’ll tell him later why he had such trouble with the mess, she thought. Right now, let him learn about cleaning up after himself.

So it’s his fault for allowing it to spread here and it’s also his fault for trying to block it from spreading here....got it.

I’ve been posting that this IS going to have dramatic effect on markets eventually, but not well received. Oh well...also told people YEARS ago that illegal immigration was going to be THE issue and was ignored. lolol.

And this on 2-23-2020:

And again... Reactions of governments hiding the truth about the seriousness of this disease have given me all the information I needed. This virus is really bad and China specifically has not come out and directly said so. The illness is far worse in the way it shows symptoms (or doesn't) and infects people.

It is far worse when one is sick with it than they are telling people. And, the mortality rate is worse and HEALTHY people who should be able to weather it are DYING. The coverup is so the very rich can move their assets to safety as much as possible before panic sets in and all hell breaks loose. The record lows on Treasury bond yields (very few understand what that means) and the sharp uptick in the price of gold tell me all I need to know about that. Batten down the hatches. It's going to be a rough ride.

The AP should mark this as an oped, but that would require honesty.
While I don’t know that Trump needed to note the fact of the virus’ origin, there’s zero reason he should avoid doing so.

They’re just annoyed that Trump is short-circuiting their hopes for a pandemic that results in mass graves and a Biden landslide in November.

how queer that cities and states think it can be fought by closing all events and daily activities...

How strange that some cities and states think they can fight it without even knowing who is in their area. Employers are looking into staff who have traveled, or live with someone who has traveled, to certain places; how can you do that with your illegals?

At this point, I’m utterly convinced that this coronavirus “pandemic” is the last gasp of the Democrats, Never-Trumpers, media and Deep State prior to the election.

When Obama declared a “National Emergency” at the end of October 2009, H1N1 (Swine Flu) had been in the United States for at least six months and had caused over 1,000 deaths, supplies of vaccines were very limited and the US response was anemic at best. There were no massive closures of public venues, sporting events, colleges and universities, schools, etc., and, as we have seen for weeks now, ANYTHING Trump does is WRONG. Witness “a travel ban on China - where COVID-19 originated - is racist,” but a European travel ban was too late. Hell, even Gavin Newsome refuses to criticize the Trump administration’s efforts to minimize the spread of the virus.

CDC reported the first case of coronavirus in the US on January 21st. Since then, of the 41 deaths in the US thus far, 31 occurred in the state of Washington, with 13 of those at a single nursing home. Over that same period, according to CDC mortality surveillance statistics, about 17,000 people have contracted the flu, with H1N1 being the most common and over 2,000 people have died from the flu.

https://www.cdc.gov/flu/weekly/#S2 (click on “View Chart Data” link under the mortality graph, which shows deaths by week from week 1 to week 8 of 2020; column H shows deaths due to influenza)

Yes, deaths are ballooning in Italy, which - not coincidentally, has a national health service that is refusing intensive care to seniors. Think that might be a contributing factor to a rise in COVID-19-associated deaths in Italy?

Tom Hanks and his wife, who are my age, apparently have the virus and they’re doing fine. Doctors who are treating people with COVID-19 are saying that the symptoms are, for the most part, relatively mild, especially for otherwise healthy people.

The Lefties and their allies couldn’t talk down the Trump economy because people could see the truth in front of their faces. Let’s hope this BS started a bit too early to influence the outcome of the election and the economy recovers in time.

It’s an approach that public health officials say ignores the new reality of a situation that is fueling panic and confusion and fundamentally altering the American way of life.

OMG, public health officials say that? Funny, the DNC has been saying that about Republicans every day for 30 years at least, using that exact phrasing. But it's never gotten traction with the American public and never will because Republicans truthfully said it first about Democrats!
