Governments love crises because when the people are fearful they are more willing to give up freedoms for promises that the government will take care of them. After 9/11, for example, Americans accepted the near-total destruction of their civil liberties in the PATRIOT Act’s hollow promises of security.
It is ironic to see the same Democrats who tried to impeach President Trump last month for abuse of power demanding that the Administration grab more power and authority in the name of fighting a virus that thus far has killed less than 100 Americans.
Declaring a pandemic emergency on Friday, President Trump now claims the power to quarantine individuals suspected of being infected by the virus and, as Politico writes, “stop and seize any plane, train or automobile to stymie the spread of contagious disease.” He can even call out the military to cordon off a US city or state.
State and local authoritarians love panic as well. The mayor of Champaign, Illinois, signed an executive order declaring the power to ban the sale of guns and alcohol and cut off gas, water, or electricity to any citizen. The governor of Ohio just essentially closed his entire state.
The chief fearmonger of the Trump Administration is without a doubt Anthony Fauci, head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at the National Institutes of Health. Fauci is all over the media, serving up outright falsehoods to stir up even more panic. He testified to Congress that the death rate for the coronavirus is ten times that of the seasonal flu, a claim without any scientific basis.

Considering how wrong you’ve been in the past on other issues, I am going with Rand Paul on this as he has a better track record than you do in my experience.
“Experts” willfully deceive & misinform as a matter of policy every day. We’ve been lied to about a myriad of issues for decades by experts regarding food, medicine & cannabis.
Since I stopped following the recommendations of “experts” every aspect of my life continues to improve.
So lets get back to what the “data” shows:
1) the threat is real and is increasing almost unabated in the United states.
2) it is highly infectious. It can be transmitted by an infected person with either no or mild symptoms.
3) symptoms are “generally” much worse than that of the cold or flu.
4) symptoms usually increase become worse by day 6 or 7.
5) fatalities are often from secondary infections due to a weakened immune response.
6) deaths are uncommon in young adults and children.
7) the fatality rates are 5-20% for those over 60yr.
8) the fatality rates are <.1% for children.
9) any age group cam become infected with and transmit the disease.
10) transmission to the US was from international travelers from infected parts of the world.
11) whether the virus will mutate into a innocuous or worse from is unknown.
12) transmission is via air and collected on surfaces
13) environmental temperatures greater than 86F begin to kill the virus, so hope that it will decrease during summer months.
14) mask and gloves should be worn by infected and those in proximity to infected. Masks are made in China and stocks in US are nearly depleted.
15) health models are predicting peak infections to occur in June. Potential for hospitals to become overloaded is by May.
16) Assuming the absence of mutations and a safe vaccine, infections will increase again starting in the fall.
17) its not the zombie apocalypse or plague, but you should be very concerned.
Certainly the data has assumptions, but more than enough is here for those that understand math and statistics to be very concerned. I am most disappointment in the “uneducated” suggestions by some on our side that this is a hoax and no worse than the common cold.

Not true. According to the most detailed statistics, from South Korea, it had a 0.7% fatality rate. Still higher than flu, but mainly because of a higher rate among the elderly.
The Diamond Princess stats are in line with this:
3,711 people on board
705 tested positive for the coronavirus
6 died
All 6 were more than 70 years old.
Fatality rate: 0.85 percent.

You forgot that 15 March was a Sunday, and that all the data is collected by government agencies that rarely work on weekends.
For instance, the CDC does not report any new COVID-19 numbers from 4 PM on Friday until 12 Noon on Monday (per the CDC website).
Also, the Case Fatality Rate (CFR) for Sunday was 3.7% compared to a 3.9% CFR on Monday. That increase is probably inside the margin of error.
By the way, although you have criticized the importance or validity of CFR, the CDC itself uses CFR in dynamic medical events. Frankly, what else is there?
I certainly agree that COVID-19 is dangerous for the elderly and the infirm. I live just 10 miles from the Kirkland, WA, nursing home where 29 people have died. On the other hand, there is very little evidence that healthy children and adults are in danger in King County (Seattle). Our youngest death was in his “forties” - they only report gender and the decade of your age. 80% of our 488 infections are over 40 years of age, and the average age of death is about 80.
Bottom Line:
(1) Protect the elderly and the infirm.
(2) Do not destroy the USA economy and our standard of living.
Finally, let me ask you a serious question...
The CDC’s most conservative USA fatality estimate for the 2019-2020 flu season is 22,000.
Can you think of any reason why we should NOT shut down the country in October when flu season starts again?
interesting numbers but not parallel to general public:
1. age distribution not rep to general population
2. passengers were mostly healthy and affluent
2. everyone was tested and took precautions.
3. I doubt that the positive-tested intermingled with the rest of the passengers.
