It's official. I just got the Santa Clara County Health Department ORDER to "shelter in place."

The Order goes into effect immediately after midnight, starting at 12:01 am, Tuesday, March 17, 2020. Although this is soon, please do not panic. The Order allows for all essential activities such as shopping, taking care of children, and getting medications to continue.

It strikes me that this “Shelter in Place” thing is backfiring right now. Californians from the six Bay Area “Shelter in Place” counties and Santa Cruz County are spreading out all over the nation, many of them no doubt taking the virus with them!

Would not surprise me a bit, either. But it is hard to do in the Western states because of the sheer number of roads that connect the states.
We discussed the possibility that 1) she may not be able to get back into California and 2) I may not be able to leave California. We decided to take the risk.

So I quickly skimmed the Santa Clara County order. Its cites Government Code sections 26602 and 41601 and Health and Safety Code section 101029, (which I probably wont read), and then ‘requests’ that sheriffs and law enforcement in the County ensure compliance. Any lawyers out there want to explain the legal authority of this ‘order’? Is it really enforceable, arbitrarily enforceable, or just wolves herding sheep?
I have posted on other threads that discouraging crowds is a reasonable action, and self isolating if you have any symptoms at all is the right thing to do. Using a flu to declare what is essentially martial law is something else altogether.

For a number of years now, some people have advocated expelling California from the union. Either giving it back to Mexico or simply letting it hang free on its own, so it can boil in its own poisonous progressive stew.
Maybe the coronavirus will accomplish that goal all by itself, by blocking travel to and from the once-Golden State?
