The Chinese health care system is pay-for-service. Upfront cash is required for hospital admissions. They were overwhelmed as well. The announcement that the government would pay for covid-19 treatment did not really help, since hospitals were overwhelmed *before* the government made its offer. You can’t treat people with capacity you don’t have. More of a PR move than anything else.

Are they still overwhelmed? Good question. We’re getting fewer reports from inside China. The censors are getting the hang of censoring medical terms and videos - something they needed weeks to figure out. While American reporters have left, European reporters presumably are on the case. But they are undoubtedly being monitored more closely than before. And now that the government has designated Uncle Sam as the foreign enemy behind the bug, credulous locals might be leery of speaking to foreign reporters.

We would not have HUGE problems in our hospitals if citizens were smart enough to know they DONT have to go to the hospital or ER just go home and get well unless you are elderly or immune compromised!! When people are calling 911 because they can’t get toilet paper is there any doubt the hospitals would be overwhelmed!!! It is ASTOUNDING how stupid some of our citizens are!!!
