CPD officers given ineffective hand sanitizer?

WGN Investigates has learned Chicago police officers have concerns the city has given them old, ineffective hand sanitizer that potentially puts them at risk.

The city distributed thousands of bottles of “Safe-Tec” hand sanitizer to officers at roll calls Wednesday morning.

Some officers who thought the bottles looked old, contacted the company.

In an email obtained by WGN Investigates, a “Safe-Tec” sales manager said the hand sanitizer hasn’t been manufactured since 2012.

A city spokesperson insists the sanitizer is effective as long as the bottle wasn't opened in the years since it was produced.

A Chicago police spokesperson blamed a nationwide shortage of hand sanitizer and issued a statement to WGN that said:

The health of our officers is of the utmost importance, and we are doing everything we can to get additional supplies. That said, there is a nationwide shortage of hand sanitizer — this includes the Chicago Police Department. The hand sanitizer distributed to officers was the only supply that was made available to CPD...

WGN pulled this from Second City Cop, a well known police blog.

From the blog:

We had information that the sanitizer had expired back in 2018 based on lot numbers.

Someone went a step further and contacted the manufacturer.

This particular product hasn't even been produced since 2012, eight years ago.

So you have it. This is the "best product available" for sale by a relative of the City of Chicago, plus shipping and handling for an emergency order.

FWIW, at home or work you fill a sink in the house or office with a half cup of bleach and water. After washing your hands in a regular sink, you dip them into the bleach water for 15 seconds. Do not use a towel to dry them shake off the excess water and let them air dry or use a paper towel.

Once a day you empty and refill the dip sink.

Did you mean to say half a cup of bleach in a sinkful of water? Half a cup of water and half a cup of bleach is not enough to dip your hands into.

.. but it would be effective at causing a chemical burn

Fill the sink half way up with water, then pour in half a cup of bleach.

Sheesh. You know what I meant. Common sensiness. Really. But thanks for the ever vigil post police editorial, of which I have added my wrath whole heartedly over the years too.

Provided it doesn’t evaporate out over time.
How tight are the seals? What is the permeability of the plastic in the seals?

An unopened household bleach loses 50% of its effectiveness per year, according to most preppers.
So, would you risk your health on something possibly less effective eight (8) years after manufacture ?

Again, ALCOHOL IS the active ingredient. Comparing bleach to alcohol is comparing apples to oranges.

As long as the seal is intact the alcohol in hand sanitizer theoretically could last for decades.

traderrob6 :" Again, ALCOHOL IS the active ingredient. "

Agreed, alcohol is a bactericide.
Ethanol, plus propanol, plus other ingredients are necessary to make a viricide.
So yes, alcohol will help protect against bacterial infection .

Why resort to harsh chemical agents when a simple pan of boiling water would be just as effective?

A reply at second city cop.

Many large cities recently sold off massive quantities of n95 masks as surplus. CTA also sold many pallets full of unused masks on the open market not too long ago.

100,000+ new n95 masks were auctioned as little as 3 weeks ago in Orange County, next to LA. Why would they sell truckloads of masks when they knew the pandemic was upon us? Was it the $200,000 they made on the sale? Is our Health only worth a few hundred thousand???

I bet the Media will be all over this story. Not.

Sorry, you are misinformed...

“Rubbing alcohol products that are at least 70 percent alcohol will kill the coronavirus with less potential for damage than bleach. When using rubbing alcohol, don’t dilute it.”

I think you only need a 5% bleach mix to be effective...
