MINNEAPOLIS (KTTC) -- A former Mayo Clinic research coordinator is facing federal charges for attempting to provide support and resources to ISIS.
28-year-old Muhammad Masood was arrested at Minneapolis- St. Paul International Airport (MSP) on Thursday by the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force.
Masood is a licensed doctor in Pakistan. According to his LinkedIn profile on Thursday, he worked at Mayo Clinic since February 2018. He was most recently a research coordinator.
In a statement to KTTC, Mayo Clinic said Masood was not an employee at the time of his arrest.
Federal authorities said Masood "expressed his desire for lone wolf terrorist attacks in the United States." He also allegedly wanted to travel to Syria to fight for ISIS.
According to court documents, Masood told a confidential source "I want to kill and get killed...and kill and get killed....and again and again."
On February 25, Masood allegedly told a source he was planning on giving a termination notice to his employer, with his final day being March 17. He was planning on traveling from Rochester to Chicago, and then from Chicago to the country of Jordan.
Court documents said he was planning on meeting with members of ISIS in Jordan. However, Jordan stopped all incoming flights due to the coronavirus pandemic, forcing Masood to change his travel plans.
Masood also discussed taking a cargo ship from California that would take him to ISIS territory within two months.
Eventually, Masood booked a flight from MSP to Los Angeles International Airport. Authorities said he took a shuttle bus from Rochester to MSP around 9 a.m. Thursday.
He was arrested by the FBI at MSP while going through security on Thursday morning.
Masood made his first appearance in U.S. District Court in Minneapolis on Thursday. He will remain in custody before a formal detention hearing on Tuesday.
