Because Florida is full of elderly people who, according to health professionals, are the most at-risk group. Because although the stores are designating a special time for the elderly to shop, they cant prevent the younger from shopping at that time and that is exactly what is happening. Left to their own devices, a majority of people will not act accordingly. Because although many snowbirds from the winter season have left, many have not and now were adding even more. Should there be a large outbreak, our hospitals would be pushed beyond capacity. And on a purely selfish note, I fail to see why Florida needs an extra dose of the virus.
As for your question re: our President, what order are you saying hes going to modify? I fail to see how my displeasure with DeSantis lackluster approach translates to some problem with our President. Trump = Federal, DeSantis = State. IMHO, President Trump has acted accordingly, allowing the States to make the decisions that make sense locally. On that note, are you a Floridian?
The bulk of Florida’s infections is in Dade and Broward counties which are already pretty much closed down. Half the counties in the state have only a small number of infections. So in DeSantis’s view, it doesn’t make sense to lock down the entire state and put the entire state out of work. Instead, the hot spots should get the focus as they pop up. That’s his philosophy.
And you can’t lock the entire state (or country) down for weeks and months. People are not going to follow it. It’s not feasible. Every state that has “shelter in place” orders are right now struggling with enforcement. Because they bit off more than they can chew. We don’t have the manpower to lockdown areas this large. You can get the national guard to lock down a city or two. But if you say we need to lock down the entire state....they are going to be stretched thin and not know where to start.
