It does test for current (and past) infections. The antibodies are present during infection.

The purpose of the test is looking for levels of antibodies in IgM and IgG.
IgM positives mean the person had the virus and recovered a short time ago (usually within a week).
IgG positives mean the person had the virus and recovered a longer time ago.
This is an antibody test - not a test to check for first infection.
