HONOLULU, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) - The National Weather Service has issued a tsunami watch for Hawaii following a large earthquake off the Kuril Islands in the Pacific.

The watch was issued about 5 p.m.

The National Weather Service said tsunami waves may have been generated by the temblor. The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake struck at a depth of about 37 miles.

It initially registered at 7.8-magnitude, but the U.S. Geological Survey later gave it a magnitude of 7.5.

The Kuril Islands are about 3,700 miles from Hawaii.

Authorities are working to determine what the tsunami threat to Hawaii might be.

Laura Kong, director of the International Tsunami Informational Center, said that earthquakes at the strength of the one in the Kuril Islands “generally have not caused huge tsunamis historically."

At 5:45 p.m., the National Weather Service said it appeared forecast levels were lower than the threat threshold. However, they were awaiting additional details.

If waves are generated, the earliest arrival of tsunami waves would be about 10:40 p.m.

This story will be updated.

I understand it was just canceled, thank Jesus.

Just today as I was having to deal with the lockdown I was thinking, what if we had a hurricane on top of this (weather has been terrible here for weeks, lots of very high winds and rain). I didn’t think about a tsunami, but it’s in the same category. It really doesn’t take much to take the islands down.

Laura Kong, director of the International Tsunami Informational Center,...

If she's a Democrat, can we call her "Donkey" Kong?

Thucydides was the first ancient historian to connect undersea earthquakes to tsunamis.

The late Roman historian Ammianus Marcellinus has a vivid description of the Alexandria tsunami of 365 CE which devastated the eastern Mediterranean.

They’re common in the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire.

WTF is up with all this at once?

I was discussing that with my wife yesterday. Saying there are billions of locusts destroying crops in Africa, rampant disease, tornadoes etc. That all we need are earthquakes and tsunamis to round out this year. We have relatives in Hawaii but they are safe on a hillside community. Wife says she knew 2020 would be a bad year. Wish she was proactive on that and would have sold our stock, but no.
