The number of people worldwide struggling with extreme heat and humidity by the end of the century could be more than four times as many as today if planet-warming emissions continue to rise, hiking economic losses and health costs, scientists have warned.
Spending on mental health, in particular, could soar as more families have trouble sleeping and working, and heat aggravates existing mental health problems, one of two new studies found.
"Heat and humidity extremes have real impacts on health and productivity," said Bob Kopp, director of the Institute of Earth, Ocean & Atmospheric Sciences at Rutgers University, and an author of one of the studies.
"What our work shows is that there is a real increase in the frequency of these rare heat and humidity extremes, and limiting global warming is the best measure we can take to prevent them," the climate scientist told the Thomson Reuters Foundation.
Previous research has examined the potential increase in extreme heat days as the Earth's climate changes.
But Kopp's work also takes into account the effects of humidity, a factor that has a huge impact on comfort levels on hot days in places from Bangkok to Chicago.
Moist, humid conditions make it harder for people to sweat away excess heat, leading to health risks including heat stroke, which can kill or disable victims who go untreated, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
"If you look at deadly heat extremes, humidity matters a lot," Kopp said.
His research, published this month in the journal Environmental Research Letters, found that more than half a billion people are likely to be hit by heat stress above safe levels by 2100 if global average temperatures rise 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) above pre-industrial times.

Yep, I’ve been predicting “normality” would return when these articles started surfacing again. Next up will be a spate of stories about homos, trannies, men-beating-girls-in-sports, “transitioning,” more “detransitioning,” blah, blah, blah. All indications things are getting back to normal.
The corona virus will kill us all before then so no worry.
(But then, maybe that is what the warmists are trying to prevent with their hysteria.)
“Scientists say...”
We'll have to watch out for that.
Maybe governments can issue air conditions and dehumidifiers.
In 10 years? Wait until August in most every state in the contiguous 48. Just like every year.
I’m getting worried...almost 50 posts and no Goebbels photo yet. Things are slipping around here.
You have to really feel sorry for poor Bob Kopp. He’s been slaving away on his research for years. He spent countless hours writing this paper and it passed all the difficult peer reviews. He finally got it published in the journal of Environmental Research Letters.
Then COVID hit and nobody gives a sh!t anymore.
Extreme Cold conditions will affect 4.3 Billion by the end of the decade. See, I’m a climatologist, you can be one too. Just out do me.
I think we're down to ten now. If the virus doesn't get us first!
The same scientists who previously said we’d all be dead by this time in history.
I looked at various links from the article and found NOWHERE that “extreme heat and humidity” were even defined. It might be there, but if so, it is well hidden.
Good. I look forward to saving a few bucks on my heating bill.
Hopefully, I’ll have some left over after paying my Air Conditioning bill.
“The Climate” and whatever direction it may take over the coming decades is a negligible problem, in the total sum of all the concerns of mankind, because of one factor that the alarmists never seem to take into consideration. Human beings are highly adaptable creatures, perhaps the most adaptable in the entire span of biological organisms that have ever existed on this planet. The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, Pestilence, War, Famine, and Death, have been charging at mankind from the beginning, and yet, we survive, sometimes even thrive.
We either succeed in the endeavor, or have a major learning experience. There is no final failure.
I say Bob Kopp could be wrong.
That was easy! I only needed one "could", too.
The very next Democrat/Left President will declare a national emergency over “climate change”. Though the government will likely “allow” you to work (after all, they need you to support their bloated payrolls, benefit packages and pork spending), they likely will prohibit you from driving a car among many other things you can well imagine (air conditioning (except in public buildings) gone!; airplane trips (except for government or connected private individuals severly curtailed!; these sorts of things)
Longyearbyen, Svalbard, Norway;
Qaanaaq, Greenland;
Upernavik, Greenland;
Khatanga, Russia;
Tiksi, Russia;
Belushya Guba, Russia;
Utqiaġvik, Alaska,United States;
Honningsvåg, Norway ;
Uummannaq, Greenland;
Hammerfest, Norway.
On the plus side, the high heat and humidity *MAY* knock out the coronavirus.
Universities should ban gas driven cars

Actually that is an excellent idea. Put your money where your mouth is. Save the planet from global warming- no driving on campus. must park elsewhere and get to classes the best way you can. no busses or electric cars (requires electricity from coal fired plants).
Trump should do an executive order
