America Is Facing a Second Great Depression. What Washington Needs to Do to Keep That From Happening
Barron's ^ | 3/21/20 | Ben Levisohn & Lisa Bellfus

Posted on 03/27/2020 9:36:37 AM PDT by Shane

The coronavirus has scared everyone, from consumers and investors to central bankers and politicians. But one question looms over everything: Are we frightened enough to do what needs to be done? That might seem surprising to say. The fiscal policy response to the coronavirus crisis is coming. It will be big. It will be costly. It will be messy. But it won’t be big enough. A robust fiscal response is an imperative if the U.S. economy is to avoid a deep, lengthy recession or, as some fear, a depression. And it’s going to have to be bigger than many of us can even imagine. The coronavirus pandemic is the ultimate black swan event, unlike any threat faced by the U.S. since the Spanish Flu of 1918. It’s not simply a financial system that needs to be backstopped, an enemy to be defeated, or even a dislocation in the commodities market that was seen in the 1970s. It’s a disease that will pass from person to person, cause dislocations in the financial system, bring economies to a standstill in its wake. And we need to be prepared to go to war on two fronts—the health crisis and the economic crisis. To succeed, Washington needs to set aside partisan bickering, xenophobia, and blame-shifting, and pass legislation first to stanch the bleeding and then to help heal the people and businesses that will bear the brunt.

"Even then, the real work will have to come from politicians." Well if that's true we are in serious trouble!Because, for the most part, politicians do not work for the People. They work for their own self interests. Thankfully Trump is a businessman, not a career politician, but he truly is facing an uphill battle.

The solution is to let our people go back to work.

The guy who sells Barbecue at the little wooden shack off of the highway knows more about maintaining the economy than all the journalists who graduated from J schools combined.

No offense to the authors, but this piece is almost a week old and some of its key points are moot.

The "health crisis" in this fiasco is nowhere near a "crisis" of epic proportions. And the economic crisis is driven by panic and hysteria, not any underlying economic trends.

The Great Depression was handled badly. I think most people who have looked at it agree with that assessment.
Our current situation does not have to be a Great Depression. We really could bounce right back. Unless we’re dumb.

I’ve been flamed for saying things are not going to recover like people think they are. In before the zot. China and the Dems own this one.

America? This is global, my friends. And it is self inflicted. H1N1 was more dangerous. It had no impact.

Yes, let’s put government in charge of EVERYTHING. Because it has worked so well in Cuba, Venezuela, China and other 3rd world shitholes.

Other than military and other critical parts of the government, should be completely shutdown.

I have it on good authority, from the Fearpers here, that no economic price is too high to pay.

I am with you. You don’t just recover from a complete unraveling. The economy is not a light switch. People are in complete denial. An economic depression that lasts a long time is already here.

I have been posting that growing up, I heard about the Great Depression 10,000 times more than the Spanish Flu. The Spanish flu was far worse than this overhyped virus. That tells you how bad a depression is!

People have no clue, and are playing their fun virus “stay safe” games, but they are about to get hit upside the head in a brutal way. It will recalibrate everyone’s priorities to where just finding food and shelter will become a challenge for millions.

It complicates it we have a MSM/DNC actively pushing us into the abyss. The slant is “an irresponsible Trump is choosing money over the health and well being of the American people to get re-elected”. This has been the constant tone on most of the briefing questions all week.

“To succeed, Washington needs to set aside partisan bickering, xenophobia, and blame-shifting, and pass legislation”

LOL I was right. Setting aside partisan bickering always means repubs must quickly agree to all dem demands. Dems have to give up nothing.
