Lessons from Italy’s Response to Coronavirus
Harvard Business Review ^ | 3/27/2020 | Gary P. Pisano , Raffaella Sadun and Michele Zanini

As policymakers around the world struggle to combat the rapidly escalating Covid-19 pandemic, they find themselves in uncharted territory. Much has been written about the practices and policies used in countries such as China, South Korea, Singapore, and Taiwan to stifle the pandemic. Unfortunately, throughout much of Europe and the United States, it is already too late to contain Covid-19 in its infancy, and policymakers are struggling to keep up with the spreading pandemic. In doing so, however, they are repeating many of the errors made early on in Italy, where the pandemic has turned into a disaster. The purpose of this article is to help U.S. and European policymakers at all levels learn from Italy’s mistakes so they can recognize and address the unprecedented challenges presented by the rapidly expanding crisis.

Lessons from Italy’s Response to Coronavirus

I think that if we'd had anyone, from Hussein 0bama to Madam Hillary Benghazi to "Bushie" and especially the bumbling idiot Biden, but Donald J. Trump running the show, we too would look like the Italian model, only with ten times the casualties.

But it would have been completely ignored by the MSM.

It is worth emphasizing that these obstacles emerged even after Covid-19 had already fully impacted in China and some alternative models for the containment of the virus (in China and elsewhere) had already been successfully implemented. What this suggests is a systematic failure to absorb and act upon existing information rapidly and effectively rather than a complete lack of knowledge of what ought to be done.

This is bull. By the time these countries were able to establish their strategies as successful Italy was already toast.

China is simply lying about their numbers. There are lots of antidotal evidence that suggests that they have lots of viral outbreaks continuing through the country.

South Korea, Taiwan and Japan are Islands. In South Korea’s case their only connection to the mainland is a heavily guarded boarder with North Korea. All three countries have homogeneous populations that are generally low crime, rule following and clean by nature.

And lastly, the fat lady has not yet sung regarding the success of their strategy. The populations of all three countries have no immunity. So they have to hold off this extremely contagious disease for 15 more months, which is the estimated time for a vaccine. It is not likely they can keep their economy and stay in doors for 15 months.

. First, there is no time to waste, given the exponential progression of the virus. As the head of the Italian Protezione Civile (the Italian equivalent of FEMA) put it, “The virus is faster than our bureaucracy.” Second, an effective approach towards Covid-19 will require a war-like mobilization — both in terms of the entity of human and economic resources that will need to be deployed as well as the extreme coordination that will be required across different parts of the health care system (testing facilities, hospitals, primary care physicians, etc.), between different entities in both the public and the private sector, and society at large.

Our bureaucracy is even worse. But, Trump has mobilized rapidly.

The only lesson to be learned here is that if you ignore the successful treatment regimen of hydroxychloroquine then your death rate will Skyrocket. That is what is happening now in the United States as hospitals are not using that as a treatment plan or a de facto standard go to. Lots and lots of people are dying right now that would have otherwise lived. The medical community it’s rejecting this treatment plan because they know what’s best for you. So when you die be sure to thank your doctor

The systematic inability to listen to experts highlights the trouble that leaders — and people in general — have figuring out how to act in dire, highly complex situations where there’s no easy solution.

Another crap sentence. Experts were all over the place. The WHO did not even call it a pandemic until the disease had spread to every major country in the world. When this report refers to experts they are only referring to the half of experts who spoke out early and often. The other half including the New York City Health Department where telling people to go to restaurants and parades 10 days before the city was in a state of emergency.

I haw e called you out on your lies before. You are flat out wrong. In addition people that get hydroxychloroquine still die. It may help but iit is not a miracle. If you hate doctors so much and know so much better I certainly hope you to dot go running to one when you have a heart attack or get cancer or have a surgical emergency. Please do not bother to reply or call me a liar again. ignorant fools like you are what give ignorant fools a bad name

Easy lady......While HCQ/Azith... is no miracle drug combo, most of the data out there show it helps significantly.

It’s imprudent and shows a lack of common sense to dismiss the preponderance of positive results because many Doctors show a lack of cajones to prescribe “off label” because the FDA has not run an 18 month double blind study on 5000 people to guarantee it’s efficacy.

have you read nothing i said? at my institution all ICU patients with known or suspected covid infection get the combo and I have prescribed it off label myself. That does not mean there is good scientific evidence yet as some are touting. And you may easy lady me when you have put your butt in the hospital on a 14 hour shift treating patients with this when you are a high risk individual yourself. Until then some common courtesy in the way you address me would be nice

And yes I lack cajones as I was not born with any. However I have prescribed these exact meds to covid patients off label in addition to working long hospital shifts caring for them with inadequate PPE despite the fact that I am a high risk individual for this disease. What have you done to demonstrate your cajones mr keyboard warrior?

Don’t bother explaining to people. Too many - on both sides of the political divide - have made this a political issue. To Democrats, a Republican could invent a super-cure and they would still find fault with it. To Republicans, a Republican could crap on live TV and somehow they’d find some good with it. The whole COVID19 thing is super politicized. So, any discussion on things like Plaquenil (hydroxychloroquine) will 100% be from a political lens.

What you can do is continue saving lives. You’re doing much more than 99.9% of people posting here, including me. God guide you and keep you and yours safe.

You are a hero.
