Back in February, health officials in New York told residents to congregate in huge crowds in “defiance” of coronavirus, a move that could have exposed thousands of people to COVID-19.
New York City Health Commissioner Oxiris Barbot posted a tweet on February 9 urging citizens to flock to Chinatown in large numbers to celebrate the lunar new year while suggesting that advice to avoid crowds was “misinformation.”

On the same day, Mark D. Levine, Chair of New York City Council health committee, lauded how “huge crowds gathering in NYC’s Chinatown” was a “powerful show of defiance of #coronavirus scare,” tweeting four images of large groups of people gathered to celebrate the occasion.

I was sure those tweets were fake. They were too bad to be true. I checked the tweets and not only are they real they are still up!
And if you want to make your blood boil, go to Levine’s tweets from say Feb. 1 to Feb 15. The Chair of the New York City Council health committee doesn’t even mention that there’s a virus going around, except insofar as it’s background to his tweets against your racism.
Oh but by the way, it’s Trump’s fault.

Did they think the Coronavirus was just another form of terrorism during which we should show our defiance by going about our normal lives and that that would impress the virus?

Unlike measles, a person can't contract coronavirus through casual, short-term exposure, according to Barbot.
"If someone is ill" with COVID-19, exposing others requires "prolonged exposure to their secretions," or droplets, from the infected patient, Barbot said.

The corollary to ‘never let a good crisis go to waste’ is ‘never let a good crisis be smaller than it could be if there is something you could do to make it worse’. Any crisis worth not letting go to waste is worth intentionally aggravating.
