Television's Vietnam: The Real Story (1984)
Catholic American Thinker ^ | Vic Biorseth

Posted on 03/29/2020 10:03:20 AM PDT by otness_e

Vietnam War Topical information:

VHS Video tape: Television's Vietnam, narrated by Charlton Heston, Sony Vietnam Video Collection, produced by Accuracy In Media.

Note: PBS was legally forced to show this, but only once, as a response to their own completely false representation of the war history. Their response to my inquiry was quite negative, deceptive and misleading. I got my copy, years ago, from an 800 number for the AIM organization, but do not see it on their current website. Amazon no longer carries it, and I can't find it anywhere. It shows how the Mainstream Media, with Cronkite in the lead, not only politically Spun the news they reported, but outright lied - big, wide and continuous - throughout the entire Vietnam War, for the apparent purpose of lowering Democracy in the eyes of the public while helping the International Communist cause. It shows them lying, in their own footage. I wonder if I have the last copy in existence. Please let me know if you find a source for one.

Stumbled upon this during my internet searches a while back (within the last year in fact). This two-part documentary was made by PBS and, predictably, only aired once due to being sued for their earlier Vietnam "documentary" The Truth About Vietnam, which as the person who posted it and as the videos point out, not only blatantly broke its stated promises of an accurate account of the Vietnam War for the historical record, serve as an antidote to misuse of history, and contribute to healing America's national esteem for the post-Vietnam War era, and contribute to historical methodology, but if anything doubled down on the falsehoods. It also had conservative actor Charlton Heston hosting the documentary.

Lots of interesting tidbits were included in the documentary. For example, did you know that the third-largest parade in America's entire history at the time was in fact a pro-Vietnam War rally? That goes to show the Vietnam War was pretty popular among people, despite the leftist history that's being fed. Also, there's a scene in there that covers John McCain, 31:24, I believe, and he makes it very clear he is NOT fond of how the media demonized POWs or their aiding in propaganda efforts by the Vietcong (and bear in mind, this was LONG BEFORE McCain disgraced himself by turning into a huge RINO, to say little about his last action in the future basically destroying any chance at ending Obamacare in the near future out of spite towards Trump over a "sleight" that the media may have just made up.). If nothing else, this bit shows that he's redeemable compared to Jane Fonda and especially John Kerry, who didn't even try to support America in any way during that war and if anything openly rooted for them, and most certainly would NEVER have made any attempt at condemning the VC. Heck, better than Roger Stone, even, who despite being a Vietnam War veteran had the audacity to try and use VC propaganda in his Platoon movie.

The documentary is in two parts. The first part gives the actual facts about the war itself primarily, as well as perception among Americans at home (the silent majority). The second part deals with the media impact of perception of the war both during and after the war.

This definitely needs to be shown everywhere. However, as noted above, you can only watch the videos through those links, as the video tapes are no longer available anywhere, not even through AIM (which was one of the reasons this documentary even exists), and you can forget Amazon carrying them, either. And obviously, PBS refuses to even acknowledge the documentary's existence on their website, let alone let people actually watch it on there.

I can’t quite remember who my father hated more, Walter Crankcase or that lowlife LBJ. It was a close race.

I personally would have hated Cronkite even more had I existed around that time. LBJ’s doing a meatgrinder bit was definitely bad, but at least he had the excuse of trying to avoid a repeat of what happened in the Korean War when the Chinese proceeded to drive MacArthur’s people out at the very least if not a nuclear war. Not to mention LBJ was clearly scared of the media due to constantly watching the three major channels’ coverage of the war, so I can forgive him somewhat, especially considering how close we got to World War III a few years before Vietnam escalated.

Cronkite, however, deliberately lied about the progress in Vietnam during the Tet Offensive (and like the other networks might have tried to paint Vietnam in a bad light as well), and there’s plenty of evidence pointing to him deciding to lie anyways on the air despite being told by Westmoreland what was going on, even cynically rationalizing that the mass graves should have been a reason to quit. Heck, there’s even evidence to suggest that he’s pretty much the reason why LBJ chickened out of a second term (we got EXTREMELY lucky that we got Nixon instead, who actually DID come far closer to an actual victory in the war, and in fact, he actually DID win us the war, despite the narrative. Congress after Watergate just stabbed South Vietnam in the back.). What’s worse, his statement during the 1990s made it clear he was a Communist sympathizer by that time. Forget Nixon, LBJ was the first victim of the Deep State (I’m not counting JFK, since Ion Mihai Pacepa and some others have already made pretty convincing arguments that the Soviets/Cubans were responsible that time for the assassination, NOT the Deep State).

The legacy of this war lives on.

There is a great sense of shame among the generation who came of age during this war.

The people sent to re-education camps. The massive escape of the survivors on rickety boats. The Killing Fields.

That shame should have been used. It should have caused a great self-analysis by this generation. The military did go through a huge self-analysis after this war.

But, there was no self-analysis by the press or the entertainment industry or the universities.

There was no self-analysis by the American culture.

So the shame lives on, deeply hidden....highly medicated...expressed in harmful ways.

Vietnam was just one front in the War Against Communism/Tyranny.

The enemy successfully replaced one group of Vietnamese people living in palaces and riding in government limousines with a different group of Vietnamese people living in the palaces and riding in the government limousines.

Wow.

Big change.

We are ahead on points at this time.

I see the Clintons as an example of how this war continues to plague this country.

I give them the benefit of the doubt that they truly believed in communism when they were young. They had the revolutionary fire in their bellies.

Then, they saw how foolish they had been. Communism was just another name for tyranny.

Their foolishness made them angry.

If they couldn’t help people, then they would help themselves.

And they did and do so to this day.

I would piss on Cronkite’s grave if I was in the neighborhood. I’ve had to resort to filling jars in case my death precludes a visit to Jane’s grave site.

Here’s hoping my executor follows my wishes.

Too bad they are stretched to fit 16:9 TVs. I am downloading it, and will see if I can correct the aspect ratio later.

Interesting take on the Clintons - hadn’t thought of it that way but I do understand your idea. The primary exception I’d take to this is the Clintons actions are aligned to the actions of the Commie apparatchik with their ZIL autos and country dachas. The Clintons have not left their Commie roots behind. They just shifted where their interests were focused.

I think the Clintons saw the dachas and realized the communists were just tyrants.

They saw that the communist leadership had been very effective in taking care of themselves.

The glorious revolution was a glorious lie.

I despise the Clintons, but I do admit that they are clever and hard working.

They could have just given up and become Social Workers, but they were too clever and energetic for that.

These communist zealots would become rich by any means open to them.

And they don’t care if they sell the rest of us into slavery and slaughter.

Zealots are zealots.

I have a hard time deciding who was the worst POTUS ever LBJ or Obama both did such damage to the country!! Obama weaponized the entire government to make it impossible for any republican POTUS to govern, LBJ destroyed the black community from being able to lift themselves up for decades creating a rift in the people of America for more than decades!!!

Didn’t Tet show that all the talk about progress in the war was nonsense? Tet was a US victory on the battlefield, but it showed we weren’t close to finishing off communism in South Vietnam.

How did Nixon “win the war”? He campaigned promising to withdraw us, and he did; we left with communist units intact in South Vietnam (and it enraged the S. Vietnamese government).

And the greatest feat the Democrats and their media lackeys did was to paint Nixon as the “Vietnam President” instead of LBJ.
