California dam removal project stirs debate over coveted West water

...Klamath River...

Now, plans to demolish four hydroelectric dams on the river’s lower reaches to save salmon — the largest such demolition project in U.S. history — have placed those competing interests in stark relief. Each group with a stake — tribes, farmers, ranchers, homeowners and conservationists — sees its identity in the Klamath and ties its future to the dams in deeply personal terms.

“We are saving salmon country, and we’re doing it The project, estimated at nearly $450 million, would reshape the Klamath River and empty giant reservoirs.

The proposal fits into a trend toward dam demolition in the U.S. that’s been accelerating as these infrastructure projects age and become less economically viable.

More than 1,700 dams have been dismantled around the U.S. since 2012, according to American Rivers, and the Klamath River project would be the largest by far if it proceeds.

More than 1,700 dams have been dismantled around the U.S. since 2012, according to American Rivers, and the Klamath River project would be the largest by far if it proceeds.

The structures at the center of the debate are the four southernmost dams in a string of six constructed in southern Oregon and far northern California beginning in 1918.

They were built solely for power generation.

Under the plan awaiting federal officials’ approval, $200 million for the demolition and river restoration will come from California and Oregon ratepayers, and $250 million will come from a voter-approved California water bond, with no liability for PacifiCorp and a guaranteed cap on its costs.

Voters in three counties who would be affected by dam removal voted against it in a non-binding question.

Even demolition advocates say dam removal, while critical, won’t be enough on its own to restore the salmon.

It appears the California government WANTS to bankrupt
land owners and small business interests. Is there a sinister plan for China & money interests to buy up rich agricultural property for cents on the dollar?

IIRC, Seth Green of Rochester NY farmed Salmon and shipped them out west. His dream was that everyone could afford Salmon.

Did he save some DNA for us?

ENVIRONMENTALIST WRECK CALIFORNIA

Example When Carlsbad opened it’s desal plant 3 years ago it was 12 years after the original proposal was approved by the city The after it went to the coastal commission and the state for approval. Carlsbad also got SD county and the surrounding cities to agree, like Oceanside and Encinitas. The plant produces 10% of the county water supply, much needed with our low rainfall. (Did Cal start a statewide construction program through two droughts with more to come on cycles? Of course not)

But it was delayed 10 years because environmental groups, who had showed up at every level of administrative hearings, took it to court. At three levels. Why didn’t a judge just say, you had your shot at three administrative levels get lost? Because politics and judges in California are democrats and democrats are environmentalist. Thus two bites of the apple.

The sierra club and others have brought us additives to gas, which poison the air and needed double gas tanks underground in every gas station in the state, no clearing of underbrush in forests making fires hotter and longer burning, and no plastic straws, while our city streets are filled with trash and feces. And there are hundreds of other examples. Ask trucking companies and others who have left the state.

Environmentalist routinely oppose any thing that benefits the state financially. Or just make sense. now if you build anew housing track you have to pay doe an environmental scientist to come every 5 years to do a report. This is in the purchase price off new homes. This is job boondoggle so they can justify jobs and thus majors on college campuses.

So what’s one more SNAFU?

A good drought right about now would make this idea go away

I doubt it.

The elite do not care about the average citizen of California. They only care about money and power.

This is the result of a one party state with a lap dog media.

No doubt American Rivers and Nature Conservancy have a hand and an angle in all this, just like they did in 2001 when they drove many farmers out of business with Federal assistance so they could buy the land at a discount and sell it back to their members

When we said “these people couldn’t be more stupid” we didn’t realize they would take it as a challenge.

The dam removal sediment could cover I5 a foot deep including the shoulders from Mexico to Oregon. Our creek is considered impaired... If any haul or skid road on the property slips one (1) cu.yd. I have to report to Water Quality, CalFire, SCCo. Fish&Wildlife. Seems fair to me.

Oh yeah! Relief to the Indians for miles around. How many Indians? And what do they have to say about it. Maybe you should read Lewis’ and Clark’s description of the salmon eating tribes on the Pacific coast.
