After complaints of a "subtexual anti-Islam sentiment," as one news report described it, Netflix has decided not to renew the drama "Messiah" after one season.
Series co-star Wil Traval broked the news on Instagram, calling it "a very sad day," Deadline reported.
The series by Michael Petroni and "The Bible" producers Mark Burnett and Roma Downey featured a CIA officer played by Michelle Monaghan investigating a mysterious messianic figure known as Al-Masih who had attracted international followers.
The name Al-Masih, Arabic for messiah, prompted a change.org petition urging a boycott of the series. The Guardian newspaper of London explained that in Islamic eschatology, Al-Masih ad-Dajjal is an evil figure comparable to the Antichrist whose name translates to "the false messiah, liar, the deceiver."
Two days before the series was to debut on Netflix globally, the Royal Film Commission of Jordan requested that the drama not be shown in the Muslim-majority country. Partially shot in Jordan, the Royal Film Commission had reviewed synopses for the series' episodes before granting approval to shoot and receive a tax credit.

I imagine their view goes something like this —
“Well, we looked at your show. Your show appears to be about a religion. And that religion does not appear to be Islam. We find this insulting. Your hatred of Islam cannot be permitted, and we demand that your show be cancelled.”
I watched a few episodes, they made every Muslim seem like the Messiah.
The age of “woke” programming.
3/4 of these shows come out of a PEZ dispenser.
Glad we cx’d gayflix.
Now we know who rules over us.
Isn’t the gay muslim ex president a higher up in Netflix now?
AKA "Mohammed". We don't need no stinkin' "subtext".
We certainly dont want to offend Mohammedans, but Christians are fair game.
Kill them all. Let Allah sort them out.
Exactly.
And the Prime series Hunters works much better if every time someone says “Nazi” you hear “Socialist”...
The ChiComs, too.
Many of them think they are that, or his appointed emissary.
The ChiComs are where the money is. The Muslims are where the sympathy is, as in, anything anti-Christian is okay by me.
Ridicule Christians all you want. For example It has become common for Characters to say Jesus F**king Christ like it was nothing, in fact I think they make a point of it. Just once see what happens if someone said Well Prophet F**king Mohammad just once. Netflix headquarters would be burnt to the ground.
This was a really good show. Was looking forward to the second season.

"A debate would be the ideal answer, but instead of feeling gratified that playwrights, audiences and the public are still actively interested in the figure of Christ, and still eager to understand his nature, the League's leaders wish to avoid discussion and to shut down debate before it even begins. Yet discussion and debate are crucial to the practice of the arts as we know them, and crucial to the health of our society."
Still waiting ...
Bet that woman in Michigan who didn’t like Married, With Children wishes she had thought of this.
