FDA Says There Is A 'Significant Shortage' Of Chloroquine and Hydroxychloroquine Due To Significant 'Surge In Demand'
Newsweek ^ | 04/01/2020 | Kashmira Gander

Posted on 4/1/2020, 6:57:18 PM by SeekAndFind

The U.S. is facing shortages of antimalarial drugs being used experimentally to treat COVID-19 patients, according to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Both hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine, which are used to treat malaria, lupus and rheumatoid arthritis, are listed as "currently in shortage" by the agency. This is "due to a significant surge in demand," the body said.

The FDA stated: "all manufacturers are ramping up production" and the agency is ensuring this is happening "expeditiously and safely."

The announcement follows FDA approval of the drugs for use in patients hospitalized by and in clinical trials for the treatment of COVID-19, after it issued the first Emergency Use Authorization for a drug related to the disease over the weekend.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) said in a statement on Sunday that it accepted 30 million doses of hydroxychloroquine sulfate from an arm of the pharmaceutical company Novartis, and one million of chloroquine phosphate from Bayer Pharmaceuticals.

On Wednesday, the FDA said the 30 million doses "is expected to help ease supply pressures for the drugs.

"This is a fluctuating and dynamic situation and the FDA is actively engaged. The agency is updating its shortages lists regularly and continuing to communicate in real-time so that patients and healthcare providers have the most current information on product shortages in the U.S."

Oh really, with the 10’s of millions of doses being donated and supposedly that we already have?

Total BS

Blow it out your butt FDA! This needs to be issued to everyone that test positive immediately. The power is in it stopping hospitalization and shortening the infected time! Get your act together!

I’m not believing it- We were just given 30 million doses of it by some country, plus Israel is giving us another 15 million or so-

If there are say 100,000 that need it (severe cases that will lead to death that they think could happen) then we have way way more than enough to treat them all- the course is 2 pills for 5 days- so that is just 1 million doses needed- We will have even more than 45 million doses soon- not to mention the millions of doses we already had before the virus took hold-

If we don’t have enough, it’s because people are hoarding it and using it while denying it to others who need it, who are dying-

Is it that hard to produce, or are some waiting for the price to go up...

We very likely could use much more than even that.

This was to be expected. We had less than a hundred tabs in our formulary for the occasional rheumatoid patient. Wholesalers are probably running out by now and I don’t know if the drug is manufactured in this country.

Hope the promised donations start arriving soon.

This was predictable. However, there are MILLIONS of doses entering the pipeline and this is a very easy drug to manufacture (that is why it is so cheap) so on the list of hysterias at the moment this one should not even register.

I don't even get it.
Chloroquine has been around for over 70 years, and even in Africa, when I was there 40 years ago, it was cheap and plentiful. I have taken hundreds of doses of Chloroquine back then to deal with malaria which I suffered from often.
What is the problem with producing more of the stuff then?

“Wholesalers are probably running out by now and I don’t know if the drug is manufactured in this country.”

I thought I heard there was a company in West Virginia that was ramping up production of the drug.

BS

200,000 known virus infections in the US

20% need hospitalization = 40,000

5 day regimen = 40,000 x 5 (if they’re ALL taking it) = 200,000 doses

Novartis has donated millions upon millions of doses.

... but not at all due to huge regulatory requirements for manufacturers.

interesting that the evil stream media has switched from “Trump CAUSED shortages by touting an UNPROVEN medicine that has NO EVIDENCE” to “shortages caused by worldwide surge to treat COVID-19”, but, but, but THERE IS NO “SCIENTIFIC” EVIDENCE FROM CLINICAL TRIALS ...

of course, the evil stream media is conveniently ignoring these 274 papers (at the moment) published in the last three months regarding treating C-19 with hydroxychloroquine:

“The announcement follows FDA approval of the drugs for use in patients hospitalized by and in clinical trials for the treatment of COVID-19”

they’re lying ... here’s the actual statement in the HHS press release:

“The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) to BARDA to allow hydroxychloroquine sulfate and chloroquine phosphate products donated to the Strategic National Stockpile (SNS) to be distributed and prescribed by doctors to hospitalized teen and adult patients with COVID-19, as appropriate, when a clinical trial is not available or feasible.”

https://www.hhs.gov/about/news/2020/03/29/hhs-accepts-donations-of-medicine-to-strategic-national-stockpile-as-possible-treatments-for-covid-19-patients.html

so, FDA specifically authorized when there’s NOT a clinical trial! assholes at newsweek got it exactly backwards!

“I don’t know if the drug is manufactured in this country.”

it is ... teva, mylan, novartis, et. al. re-opening U.S. plants to make tens of millions of doses ... they announced that 10 days ago and first big batches have already been donated to the national strategic stockpile ...
