“Like Watching a Horror Movie”: Sweden’s Liberal Approach to Coronavirus Under Fire
summit.news ^ | 31 March, 2020

Sweden has not imposed the kind of draconian lockdown measures enacted by other European countries.

People are still allowed to gather in crowds of up to 50, as well as visit bars, nightclubs and cinemas. Borders and schools remain open. Although more people are working from home, life is pretty much as normal.

“We who are adults need to be exactly that: adults. Not spread panic or rumors,” Prime Minister Stefan Löfven told Swedes in a recent televised address.

The goal is to slowly infect the population with coronavirus in order to create “herd immunity,” an approach that has been called dangerous by health authorities in other major countries and health experts within Sweden itself.

Although the country has recorded just over 4,000 coronavirus cases, 146 people have died, which is more fatalities than Denmark, Norway and Finland combined.

It’s their choice. Just don’t let any of them into your country.

I do think certain aspects of the lockdown are unnecessarily severe. Such as not being able to go outside even to a deserted spot and I don’t really like all the liberties we’re so easily being forced to give up but on the other hand I can understand some of the restrictions. So I’m really torn about this.

Should be an interesting experiment.

Glad to see some countries try something different.

3 parishes here in Louisiana are now passing curfew’s as to WHEN you can be out period! WTF? What / how can you even reason with a sector of our population that will claim the high horse if this virus doesn’t meet death toll’s predicted because “we did what they suggested !” or the other being IF people die in mass volume “YOU should have been more draconian !!!”....Its a no win situation for those such as myself who think this is getting out of hand . 12 days left to see if MODEL’s by our educated are to come to fruition ....losing far to many liberties for what security.....time will tell .

The 3.65% death rate suggests they are not testing many people. I like South Korea’s approach of massive testing to catch asymptomatic cases and quarantine all positive cases. South Korea seems to have had “lockdown light” with individuals encouraged to stay at home but no forced closure of businesses. Ultimately, with what we know about this disease, there is no reason to force people to fear and cower in their homes. It’s just not that harmful or severe. I’m trying to figure out how the policies could be more severe if the disease killed 50% of the people who got it. There’s no way to make the lockdown policies in many U.S. states more severe. So that suggests they are TOO severe now, because the disease is nowhere near as severe as it could be, yet our policies could not get any more severe.

IMHO, you’re right about being outside in a deserted spot. However, I also think that it’s probably necessary to make everything black or white, for compliance and enforcement. If there are any grey areas (if, ands, or buts) too many people would be going out in places that were ‘nearly’ deserted, or even ‘not too crowded’. Clear and simple directions are best.

So they’re treating the disease the same way they treat rapefugees. Don’t do anything to offend it/them.

Pretty sure President Trump said Sweden has dropped that strategy in the April 1 task force briefing. Did he get that wrong? Wonder if he might have gotten them mixed up with the UK.

If I know my Norwegians, to them, "social distancing" means increasing the usual 20-yard distance when speaking to close friends or family to 30 yards.

The population of Sweden as of January 31, this year, is 10,333,456: roughly the population of a U.S. state of medium population density. That’s about 1/32 (one thirty-second) of the number of the United States population.

The situation does not look good for Sweden.

Deaths 259

Recoveries 103

Not being able to go outside for exercise, even without mingling with people outside of your household? It’s not like that all over the States. It makes sense in very densely populated areas, though.

Sweden’s current numbers...

Population - 10.3 million

Infected - 4,947

Fatalities - 239

New York City’s current numbers...

Population - 8.4 million

Infected - 84,046

Fatalities - 1,374

Obviously, NYC is much more densely populated.

On the other hand, almost every large town in Sweden is within a 400 mile train ride, often through spectacular scenery.

The smart way to handle it. They will have “herd immunity” without wrecking the economy.

It is how we manage the flu every year.

Re: The situation does not look good for Sweden.

Their seasonal influenza numbers in 2018-19 - infections and fatalities - were 2X their current numbers.

Sweden Influenza Infection - 13,757

COVID-19 Infections - 5,009

Sweden Influenza Fatalities - 505

COVID-19 Fatalities - 259

80% of their influenza fatalities occurred within an eight week period in 2018-19.

About 1:34:50 into the briefing. He mentions herd mentality and Sweden. Think he may have mixed Sweden up with the UK. I can’t find anything in the news about Sweden abandoning that approach.
