I deal with companies like Walmart and Target. In most cases, they will simply buy whatever is cheapest. If they find their competition is selling at 5 cents cheaper, they will come back to you the supplier, and bash you over the head for a 6 cent discount. Retailers like this are hugely responsible for manufacturing leaving for China and elsewhere.
Speaking personally, I would pay more per tub of strawberries if I know its picked by Americans, or if it is local. I actively seek out local food products from our local farmers. I know I’m a small minority among all consumers, but I agree that Americans won’t come out to work on farms if welfare options are available, nor will corporations encourage hiring only Americans, either.
Too many small biz owners use big box retailers as an excuse for failure.
And now that there’s a stigma coming with the words “Made in China”, small biz might want to use that and run with it.
