Such were the expectations for the Navy hospital ship U.S.N.S. Comfort that when it chugged into New York Harbor this week, throngs of people, momentarily forgetting the strictures of social distancing, crammed together along Manhattans west side to catch a glimpse.
On Thursday, though, the huge white vessel, which officials had promised would bring succor to a city on the brink, sat mostly empty, infuriating local hospital executives. The ships 1,000 beds are largely unused, its 1,200-member crew mostly idle.
Only three patients had been transferred to the ship, officials said, even as New York hospitals struggled to find space for the thousands infected with the coronavirus. Another Navy hospital ship, the U.S.N.S. Mercy, docked in Los Angeles, has had a total of 15 patients, officials said.
If Im blunt about it, its a joke, said Michael Dowling, the head of Northwell Health, New Yorks largest hospital system. Everyone can say, Thank you for putting up these wonderful places and opening up these cavernous halls. But were in a crisis here, were in a battlefield.

so the cruise ships should take their passengers there.
Barf alert needed.
So are they blaming the President for this fact?
He provided the ship - Cuomo surely has some responsibility to get the NYC hospitals to fill it up.
Waaaaaaah! Orange Man Bad! Waaaaaaah!
We are nowhere near the top of the curve.
NYC is still a week from peak. To write this article at this time is journalistic malpractice.
The two ‘rat Cities can’t get cardiac arrest victims delivered there instead of just dumping them on the street?
Drug overdoses?
Same thing with Newsome in CA.
Are they INTENTIONALLY not transferring patients? This sounds like such BS!
Management skills! The president has that in abundance. Governor Ventilator, not so much. Is this the RAT’s next best hope?
So The NY Times has either accidental discovered that bureaucracy sucks or has perhaps undermined its account of crowded hospitals. Not sure which one.
Wow - this is good news! I give thanks to God. But the article reads like it’s very bad.

Maybe they could take it up the Hudson and house homeless.
Wow, only three non-Covid patients in all of New York City! Whoulda thunkit?
Nope. Just tell the paramedics to tell those cardiac arrests “Sorry. Mayor says I can’t transfer you to the hospital. Here’s a Tylenol for you. Have a good evening.”
Time to review that list, I guess.
The two ‘rat Cities can’t get cardiac arrest victims delivered there instead of just dumping them on the street?
Drug overdoses?
Ingrown toenails?
They are there to treat non-coronavirus patients that NY hospitals don’t have the space to deal with. These liberal hospital execs are nuts. The military docs need to stay healthy. If we get into a shooting war now, who’s gonna treat the soldiers, if the military docs are sick? NY doctors?
So our lord Cumo is not using the resources available to him.
Trump neglected to send a fleet of ambulances to transport people from the NYC hospitals to the Comfort. /S
