U.S. coronavirus deaths top 1,000 in single day, White House expected to recommend everyone wear masks

The death toll and economic devastation from the novel coronavirus reached staggering new levels in the United States on Thursday as officials reported more than 1,000 deaths from the pandemic in a single day and revealed that more than 6.6 million Americans had sought unemployment benefits in a single week.

The White House is expected to urge at least some people across the country to begin wearing cloth masks or face coverings in public to dampen the spread of the virus. The potential reversal of earlier mask recommendations - which White House officials indicated Thursday were still being debated - signaled the seriousness of the outbreak and rising concerns in Washington about the effect it could have on millions of Americans.

Local officials in one Texas border town already have threatened to fine those who don't cover their nose and mouth if they go out in public. Vice President Mike Pence said guidance on the topic would be issued in coming days; a White House official later said that the guidance would be targeted to those in areas where community transmission is high.

But coronavirus task force coordinator Deborah Birx on Thursday said officials worry that encouraging mask use might interfere with the White House's prior social distancing guidance, which calls for people to stay home, avoid gatherings of more than 10 people and keep a safe distance from nonfamily members.

"The most important thing is the social distancing and washing your hands, and we don't want people to get an artificial sense of protection because they're behind a mask," Birx said. "When the advisory comes out, it will be an additive piece, if it comes out, rather than saying this is a substitute for" social distancing.

America cemented its position as the new epicenter of the outbreak on Thursday...

And where in China's holy Name are we supposed to GET them?

I went to get some soda at Costco and at 8am the line for TP was all the way around the parking lot, waiting to get in.

They were all loyally keeping their distances from each other, bet even a glance would reveal that there wasn't going to be enough for everyone, unless the building was full of bales of Charmin. All stupid Democrats? It's indicative behavior of the the half-clever Left.

Since I'm deep behind enemy lines, here in the Pacific NW, all the other stores are closed, so building your own is not an option.

And where are they supposed to get those masks? I can’t get enough masks when I am working. a hospital shift.

I know Mom MD. My wife and daughters are nurses, and they are in the same boat.

If NJ is going to start "seizing" medical supplies at the point of a gun, we are in big, big trouble as a nation.

Story writers don’t write their own headlines.

And headline writers don't read their own publication's stories. And they wonder why we call them Fake News.

The President himself said masks were not mandatory. If there are no masks, wear a thick scarf or other cloth mask. It can’thurt

Didn’t hit 1000 yesterday. 914 deaths attributed out of 300 million.

Considering that people are actively shaming others for wearing masks, calling them hoarders and haters, this is ironic.

It makes the admin look like idiots.

CDC:

https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/prevent-getting-sick/prevention.html

“If you are NOT sick: You do not need to wear a facemask unless you are caring for someone who is sick (and they are not able to wear a facemask). Facemasks may be in short supply and they should be saved for caregivers.”

Mayo Clinic

https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/coronavirus/symptoms-causes/syc-20479963

“CDC doesn’t recommend that healthy people wear a face mask to protect themselves from respiratory illnesses, including COVID-19. Only wear a mask if a health care provider tells you to do so.”

Already happening in Iowa.

They say it is a donation, but men with guns don’t walk into a plant and demand a donation.

Of course, the nurses and doctors are not allowed to wear masks in order to “save” them, unless they are working with a confirmed case.

I am seriously thinking of getting a beaked plague mask and just wearing that over my 6000 series respirator. That way, it won’t get forcibly donated. d

Yup. That has been the official guidance on masks since the start (including a widely circulated video starring the Surgeon General).

Walking this back now will reveal them to be clueless and ratchet up the panic. In the end I suspect they don’t do it.

Rich people wear masks.

The rest of us are on our own.

The left does ballot harvesting. But of course there’s no way they could possibly do death harvesting right? It’s the one who counts the units that matters not the one who cast the unit. You don’t get what I’m saying I can’t help you.

So I should be ashamed to wear the masks I bought during a sanding and refinishing project 3 or 4 years ago that have been sitting on the shelf?

So you bought masks. Good for you. Ashamed? Don’t know why you would even say that. Curious.

I’m a disabled veteran who didn’t buy masks.

And I’m sure as hell not gonna find any now, except high priced ones.

I’m not ashamed at all. It was my good fortune. Which, as an over-70, I could use.

But, your original comment was along the lines of “masks for the rich, tough titty for the rest of us.” Seemed a bit like shaming, so I thought I’d see if you’d amplify.

UNLESS that mask covers your eyes you are still wide open to this virus if you believe it is spread thru the air.

Don’t wear it if you think it makes you safe by itself.

In order:
Stay 6 feet away from folks
Wash Hands frequently. Use hand sanitizer
Keep hands away from face
Wear a mask

the simple truth is the masks probably don’t help. the paper masks are saturated with the moisture from your breath after 20 minutes and lose much of their efficacy. The N-95s are more robust but must be fit properly and worn properly to function and are only good for one use. currently I have one mask per day not necessarily N95 and I have to keep track and wear it up to 24 patient contact hours for 3 days keeping it in a paper bag in between. And this is to work with know. positive patients. You tell me how effective that is. 🙄

Beyond that there are very credible reports of panicked people stealing masks from hospitals. I have heard some of this first-hand from people who work in hospitals. What do you think will happen if Pence gets up on that podium and tells us all to start wearing masks?

In some ways it doesn’t matter any more. Those of us who work in hospitals are already thoroughly exposed due to inadequate ppe. If they recommend the general public. wear masks we will never see adequate supplies in hospitals. Of course the damage is already done just by rhee. talking about it
