Former Maryland Lt. Gov. Kathleen Kennedy Townsend’s daughter and grandson are missing after authorities say they were seen struggling to return to shore in a canoe near Herring Bay, a family member confirmed Friday.

David McKean says his wife, Maeve Fahey Kennedy Townsend, 41, and son, Gideon Joseph Kennedy McKean, 8, are the people last sighted 10 miles south of Annapolis near Herring Bay.

McKean declined to comment further.

Anne Arundel County fire officials say a concerned citizen called 911 around 4:30 p.m. Thursday to report that he saw the woman and her son in a small canoe or kayak from the Columbia Beach community pier.

Exact same thing I was thinking. I live by the Bay where this happened. With the windchill, it felt like the 40s all week, and the water temperatures are likely in the 50s.

Herring Bay is a shallow body of water and can be very rough in certain wind conditons, especially in springtime. Canoes are not very seaworthy.

Missing overnight in a cold ocean, empty canoe washed up.

Survival chances of that are slim to none unless you are a prepped and trained navy seal.

I thought he was 8? Not that that improves anything. Stupid mother taking him out in those conditions.

WTF? She took an eight-year old out on the bay in a canoe?! It was cool and windy yesterday, not good weather to be out on the water... in a canoe!

Since they found the canoe but not the bodies, I would assume neither were wearing life jackets

Five years old, eight years old—what’s the difference? The mother was supposed to be the adult in charge, making responsible safety decisions for her child.

I wouldn’t know. Never saw it. Can you reference a Perry Mason episode?

McKean graduated from Georgetown University with a joint J.D. degree from Georgetown Law and a master of science degree in international negotiations and conflict resolution from the Walsh School of Foreign Service.

Man, that's a mouthful but other than the jd it seems all bs. Apparently she never practiced law, just had a bunch of patronage positions. I hope she and her daughter are okay, but it doesn't look good.

It doesn’t matter to me what the last name is/was, it is still a tragedy if this ends the way I think it might.

Losing a child, no matter the age, is something that I don’t wish on anyone. The pain is awful and one most on the outside cannot see.

The problem he had was being VFR only qualified and flying in IFR conditions. He likely lost situational awareness and crashed. Knowing your limits is an integral part of any dangerous endeavor. JFK jr. obviously didn’t know his, or decided to ignore them.

The empty canoe was found overturned. If they jumped into it quickly just to review a floating ball, it's very likely they didn't put on life jackets.

Yes, crashed into the ocean—
Spatial disorientation—
“ the inability to correctly interpret aircraft attitude, altitude or airspeed, in relation to the ground or point of reference”.
Plunging may indeed not be the
right word, but crashing into
the ocean due to spatial disorientation and his inexperience.

FWIW, I think they’re dead, too. At least, she is. I just don’t think accidental.

Ugh.
