With cold water, life jackets probably not much use,unless extremely lucky and found quick by someone.

The best advice I can give from my years boating is before any trip always presume you will go overboard. Helps preparedness, situational awareness and behavior while on the water.
But your kid chasing his favorite ball into the water? That’s a tough one.
