One of these substitute gods has been nature.
Indeed, of all the false gods, nature is probably the most natural for people to worship. Every religion prior to the Bible had nature-gods – the sun, the moon, the sea, gods of fertility, gods of rain and so on.
That is why the further Western society gets from biblical, i.e., Judeo-Christian, religions, the more nature is worshiped.
Everyone on the left and right cares about the environment. But caring about the environment is not the same as environmentalism. Environmentalism, for most of its adherents, is a secular religion. These people, many of whom refer to, and truly regard, the Earth as a goddess (Gaia, the name of the ancient Greek Earth goddess) worship the environment.

Hulk Hogan said the other day:
In a religious-themed Instagram post to kick off Easter week, Hogan suggested this new era of social distancing was a form of punishment or discipline from God.
“In three short months, just like He did with the plagues of Egypt, God has taken away everything we worship,” Hogan wrote. “God said, ‘you want to worship athletes, I will shut down the stadiums. You want to worship musicians, I will shut down Civic Centers. You want to worship actors, I will shut down theaters. You want to worship money, I will shut down the economy and collapse the stock market. You don’t want to go to church and worship Me, I will make it where you can’t go to church.”
Hogan suggested God needed people to “humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways” in order to “forgive their sin and ... heal their land.”
“Maybe we don’t need a vaccine,” Hogan wrote. “Maybe we need to take this time of isolation from the distractions of the world and have a personal revival where we focus on the ONLY thing in the world that really matters. Jesus.”

The Scriptures take a very judgmental view of anyone who worships the creature, rather than the Creator. That SHOULD BE a no-brainer, but alas, there is no accounting for the depraved human soul.
Nature is to be conquered and turned to our advantage.
There is only one God. Surely you know that.

There was an amusing scene in one of the early Comic Book movies in which Captain America prepares to fight Thor of Asgard. Someone warns Cap to stay out of it — “He’s a god, you know …” But Captain America shakes his head: “There’s only one God, Ma’am … and I’m pretty sure He doesn’t dress like that.”
Nature is to be enjoyed...God is to be worshiped.
