I am sure I am not the only freeper who appreciated the songwriting genius of John Prine
Rest In Peace, John Prine. He lived a good long life but it looks like every single death is now going to be counted as CV19 related.
Shadows! Shadows!
RIP
My favorite was In Spite of Ourselves w/ Iris Dement
Used to go to Chicago’s Old Town and listen to him sing “Six OClock News” and Stevie Goodman sing “Lincoln Park Pirates.”
Oh,the good old days.
I think an “illegal smile” would be in order now
I saw him and Goodman at the Park West waaaay back in the day.
Incredibly talented songwriter.
He will be missed.
L
I heard he was in trouble the other day.
Too early.
RIP.
Adios Johnny, you will missed and you were marvelous.
Adios Johnny, you will missed and you were marvelous.
I remember those early days at the Cellar Door in Georgetown when you would stop in and play quite often.
This former mailman was a songwriting genius. I suppose he might have been an acquired taste. One of my favorites was “Angel from Montgomery” in which he opines “how the he&& can a person go to work in the morning, to come home in the evening and have nothing to say?”. I’ve rolled that query through my feeble brain many’s a time when dining out and seeing couples who have nothing to say to each other. Maybe they’re just burned out, cheesed off, or not intelligent enough to string together two words of convo. Whatever, brings this song to memory. His phrasing was phenomenal.
One of my favorites... Souv.enirs
I hate graveyards and old pawnshops, for they always bring me tears. I can’t forgive the way they robbed me, of my childhood souvenirs...
Greatest line ever written.
RIP John Prine. One of my favorires:
Dear Abby, dear Abby
My fountain pen leaks
My wife hollers at me and my kids are all freaks
Every side I get up on is the wrong side of bed
If it weren’t so expensive I’d wish I were dead
Signed unhappy
My brother is a folkie - gave me a few Prine albums to try out back in the day. That was the one song I still remember.
“When I die let my body float down the Green River,
Let my soul rise on up to the Rochester Dam.
I’ll be halfway to heaven with paradise waitin’,
Just five miles away from wherever I am.”
— From “Paradise” as sung by John Prine
Hope he got his wish. He deserves it. Farewell, good man.
As I said in the other thread, we saw John twice in January at the 30A Songwriter Festival, 4 times in October at the All The Best Fest in the Dominican Republic, NYE 2018-19 at the Grand Ole Opry, and in May 2018 at Beaver Dam KY within 10 miles of the former site of Paradise, KY (Muhlenberg County). Plus a bunch of times in the 30 years previous. Saw Bonnie warm up for John way back when, then when she got big, saw John warm up for Bonnie. Got to see Angel as a duet either way.
Needless to say, we are bummed.
