Mattis tried to undercut POTUS while serving & bad mouthed him after he was fired/resigned. Why would his recommendation of Fine be convincing or germane?
Mattis was sold as a hero but he was an arrogant, passive aggressive backbiter. Possibly he was a good soldier brought down by success and the wrong take on politics.

Mattis got his stripes in an organization where he was rewarded for killing his enemies. He did well and I commend him for his many successes. In politics, however, it is important to be competent in recognizing and successfully dealing with liars. It’s obvious he doesn’t do as well in that.
