this whole Pfizer vaccine and “promising treatment” is nothing but a BS publicity stunt given that:

“with clinical trials expected to begin later this month, and “there is potential to supply millions of vaccine doses by the end of 2020 subject to technical success of the development program and approval of regulatory authorities and then rapidly scale up to capacity to produce hundreds of millions of doses in 2021.”

i.e., no faster than any of the other of the many vaccines currently in development ...

the situation with their “promising treatment” is even more absurd:

” Pfizer has identified a lead drug to treat the new coronavirus, Chief Scientific Officer Dr. Mikael Dolsten said Thursday.

The possible antiviral, “if successful, would be given early in the disease process, when patients are admitted to the hospital,” Dolsten told CNBC’s Meg Tirrell.

The company believes it could enter clinical trials in “just a few months,” Dolsten said.

Right. the “promising” drug won’t even be ready for clinical trials for a few months, and of course THOSE kinds of trials typically can take MANY months to complete, years even ... so even if the drug works, it probably wouldn’t be available until 2022 at the earliest ... by then, COVID-19 may very well have disappeared just like SARS and MERS did ...

What does it mean that they appear to be focusing on meds used to treat autoimmune disorders? Any medical types here, does that tell you anything important about this virus or no?

I won’t be going near any vaccine that appears on the near horizon. It is likely to be half-arsed and rushed to approval as a face saving measure.

Tofacitinib is another immunosuppressive drug (in this case, a JAK inhibitor) which, like tocilizumab (an IL-6 inhibitor) could potentially be used to treat late-stage COVID when cytokine storm is recognized.

This press release is presumably Pfizer’s response to concerned stockholders wondering when and if they are going to get in the game.

Cytokine inhibitors may well save a few lives. We have tocilizumab in our schematic (but haven’t used it yet). But these drugs are not antivirals and won’t have wide-scale application in solving the problem.

OK, so now all the pharmas will be falling all over themselves to announce their great new patent medicines. It was a sad day when the FCC allowed advertising of so-called ethical medicines.
