Mark Cuban predicts 'world-changing' innovation stemming from outbreak, keeps 'door open' to 2020 bid

Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban believes that despite the negative impact the coronavirus outbreak has had on the U.S., it will result in ‘world-changing’ innovation – and possibly his own run at the presidency.

“People aren’t going to just venture outside. They're not going to go to large gatherings. They're not going to feel confident right off the bat. There’s going to be a lot of trepidation. And that concern is going to lead to people holding back on spending money.”

“When the scientists say it’s safe for my employees to come back to work, that’s when I’ll feel confident enough to let them go back to work,” he said.

Cuban’s next venture could potentially put him in a position to lead the national recovery, as he acknowledged a presidential bid could be in his future. While he admitted that this is not a serious thought at the moment, he would not call it an impossibility given the current state of affairs.

“I never would have considered it prior to a month ago, but now things are changing rapidly and dramatically,” he said. Cuban said he is not “actively pursuing” anything just yet, but noted anything could happen, even though the deadline for independent candidates has already passed in some states.

“I’m just keeping the door open,” he said.

Bernie supporters and some Biden would never back him.

He endorsed Hillary during a joint appearance in Pittsburgh in 2016.

That’s reason enough to not like him, amongst others.

The only thing you are running, Cuban, is your mouth...

I have seen him in action on ‘Shark Tank’ and I am not impressed. A ‘no vote’ here.

I think people are bursting at the seams to get out and do things, get back to work, and spend some money.

He is like a lot of the other internet geniuses who hit upon a really good internet website and became billionaires off of it. They then seem to think they are smart enough to run the whole Republic.

Agreed. Look at Little Mikey. He spent a couple of billion dollars and didn’t make half-way through the primaries.

It’s easy to convince yourself of your greatness when you’re a billionaire surrounded by 200 “Yes Men”.

Go for it, Mark. And please let me be your campaign manager because I would really love to make a million dollars just for saying “yes” all day.

If you wait for the “scientists” you’ll never work again. for 2 years.

If this goes for much longer -perhaps it is too long already- we will be a depressed third world nation and there will be no First World left. There will be no jobs and Venezuela will be happening.

That pent up demand depends on pent up savings but with many many folks having no income for the duration that demand will be all in their minds. Lots of landlords are deferring rent but that is DEFERRING not cancelling. It will all come due with the end of the Great Universal House Arrest but there will be much reduced funds to pay it.

True. But not everybody is out of work. Some are working from home and still getting paid. I for one will be contributing to the economy when they set me free. :-)

Actually, I am working a whole lot of overtime and it isn’t at home. I am a security guard at a shipyard and lots of other guards got scared of being around all those workers that don’t have masks on and don’t come in. So I work 7 days (nights) a week on 10 and 12 hour shifts. For being “low paid” I am making pretty good money.

Cuban is a nice guy but just because he has money doesn’t make him qualified.

Wow. That’s a lot of work. But there isn’t much else going on and you get extra dollars. Sounds good.

Cuban is a legend in his own mind. You’re not going to be President.

Same exact thing they said about Mr. Trump. Word for word. I like Cuban. He doesn't take any crap from the NBA and continues to speak his mind (and paying fines).

I think Cuban has in mind wider use of the internet and home computing for work, education, food delivery, and public meetings and events. This is now widely projected because the virus is thought likely to persist as a threat for another year and a half before a reliable vaccine is developed, tested, approved, and widely administered. The result is likely to be a long term change in public habits and preferences.

In addition, the economic malaise and high unemployment of the late 70s and early 80s are now thought to have provided the time and opportunity for otherwise idle inventors and innovators to conceive of the advances that powered the ensuing years and decades. Think of the millions of skilled, ambitious young people now out of work but trying to think of ways to get back in the game. In five or ten years, we will be seeing new, amazing things from them.
