The hastily built field hospital set up by the Army in Seattle's pro football stadium is shutting down without ever seeing a patient, so the service can shift resources where they're more urgently needed, Washington state Gov. Jay Inslee said.
Medical equipment at the CenturyLink Field Event Center is being returned to the Federal Emergency Management Agency for use elsewhere, but the governor cautioned against reading too much into the move.
"Don't let this decision give you the impression that we are out of the woods," Inslee said in a statement Wednesday. "We have to keep our guard up and continue to stay home unless conducting essential activities to keep everyone healthy." Washington state saw the first coronavirus death in the U.S. on Feb. 29.
The state asked FEMA and the Army Corps of Engineers to convert the football stadium "before our physical distancing strategies were fully implemented and we had considerable concerns that our hospitals would be overloaded with COVID-19 cases," Inslee said.
"But we haven't beat this virus yet and, until we do, it has the potential to spread rapidly if we don't continue the measures we've put in place," he said.
Inslee joined Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan in praising the work of the Army's 627th Hospital Center out of Fort Carson, Colorado, in setting up the field hospital, which closed only three days after opening for patients.
"These soldiers uprooted their lives to help Washingtonians when we needed them most. Since then, it's become apparent that other states need them more than we do," Inslee said.
Durkan said the judgment has been made that the state's hospitals currently have the capacity to deal with the coronavirus threat.
"We are making the right decision to allow other cities to have these resources and capacity," she said.

The mammoth Jacob Javits Convention Center, which was converted into a field hospital for thousands of patients lie mostly empty.
All these even as other hospitals in the borroaghs of New York City are saying that their Covid-19 cases are overflowing.
There clearly is a mal-distribution of resources in the City.

(EXCERPT)
The military-run hospitals at the Javits Center and onboard the USNS Comfort remain mostly empty so far treating only 110 patients between them, Pentagon officials said Tuesday.
Both facilities were established in New York after Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Mayor Bill de Blasio begged for federal support last month to manage the spiraling outbreak of the coronavirus, but they have been hampered by logistical and communication constraints, officials said. Javits, the sprawling convention center on the West Side of Manhattan, has a capacity for 2,500 people but so far has 66 patients. The Comfort, the Navy hospital ship docked in the Hudson River, has 44 patients out of a capacity for 500.
Be patient please! Ten days, beg of you! Soon many people will die. I promise, dont lose the faith!!!!
Horrible waste of money.
well that’s actually good news! If the back up hospitals weren’t used ....
Adam Schiff will be adding this into his “deep dive” investigation. Surely Donald Trump made money on it somehow.
Would you say the same thing for those who bought extra groceries to back up what they had?
That is funny?
Really? Sarcasm can only go so far, you went beyond that.
Shouldn’t the Seattle communists have been scooping up the derelicts with a bulldozer and putting them in lockdown?
RE: well thats actually good news! If the back up hospitals werent used ....
I can tell you that in NYC, the field hospitals like the 2,500 bed facility built at the Jacob Javits Convention Center are only 10% full, not because of lack of Covid-19 patients, but because of bureaucratic red tape. Other hospitals badly need relief while this one lies 90% empty.
All the while, WA Gov. Jay (I don’t do sh^t unless the DNC tells me what to say and do) Inslee was complaining he was not getting any help from Donald.
my hospital is going back to normal this week....we’ll keep a very few beds for covid but that surge they kept talking about....never....showed....up.....
well then that’s a result of bad management cooperation for whoever is over seeing this.......is the hosptial leadership dragging their feet for whatever reasons, or Dibasio falling to do his job? This would be also something Cuomo should have straightened out pronto.
If they’re using the excuse of ‘bureaucratic red tape’ that’s just evidencing the wrong people are at the top.
Almost EVERY dam day on the Forrestal we heard over the 1MC:
This is a Drill, This is a Drill”
RE: my hospital is going back to normal this week....well keep a very few beds for covid but that surge they kept talking about....never....showed....up.....
May we know what city you live in?
BTW...my ‘state’ PA. went from 5,805 April first to 22,833 as of today..... In less then two weeks we’ve seen a surge statewide. However counties vary as to the degree on increase of course but most cases are those near new York and New Jersey borders.....The eastern border is far worse off then the Western border.
New York dragging their feet at the onset really hurt our Western Border.
Washington State run by a psychopathic governor, Inslee and Seattle by a Marxist nutcase mayor, Durkan (just following the Marxism and stupidity of his predecessors).
You get what you vote for and deserve, Democrats. However, you take everyone down the crapper with you unless you are a rich elitist democrat. In that case, you don’t give a good crap what happens to the masses. You’ve got yours and that’s how you like it.
I was curious as to why they set up the field hospital in the open football stadium, rather than the baseball stadium which is ~4 blocks away and has a retractable roof. Particularly so knowing Seattle weather.
I thought that was weird, too.
