The Vietnamese ship was sunk near the disputed Paracel Islands, an island chain which has been one of the hot points of tension in the area.

I visited the Paracel Island group before the Chinese took it. Paracel itself is very small maybe two square miles. It housed a French Foreign Legion cemetery, and there were mounds of guano minded by Japan during WWII and left to moulder. The nearby islands of the group are very small and the area between islands is very shallow. Unfortunately, some islets were used by giant sea turtles to lay their eggs. Knowing the Chinese, one can expect that the parade no longer happens. The Chinese occupation is illegal, and the Vietnamese have maps that go back centuries that prove its ownership.

“...why would they have China Coast Guard written in English?”
Many Coast Guard vessels around the world have identification in English. English is the language of business and other things.
But surprisingly they didn’t show pictures of 3901 which was patrolling the area at the time of the incident. It is their 12000 ton cutter that is highly armored and fast. Big guy on the block. It is equipped with 76 millimeter rapid fire guns, two auxiliary guns, and two anti-aircraft machine guns that we know of. It also has a helicopter platform and hangar in the stern large enough to accommodate larger rotary wing aircraft which they won’t identify. It can turn 25 knots. Apparently they don’t identity with the one riot, one ranger attitude. All they needed was their Chuck Norris.

I have many Vietnamese friends, and not just South Vietnamese who fled after the war, but more recent arrivals. They hate China, but don’t trust their own government to stand up for the Vietnamese people. The coastal disputes with China are important, but a bigger problem is the diversion of water from the Mekong River watershed, that is creating an ecological disaster in the Mekong Delta - Vietnam’s breadbasket.
F China... I hope Vietnam gives them hell.
I grew up in Long Beach, Cal after the warthe big one. There were lots of ships in mothball there at the time. Of course someone had to patiently explain to be that there really weren’t a lot of mothballs in the ships.
I can also remember Long Beach harbor filled with Navy ships when “the fleet was in”. Impressive sight.
That would have been a rather long time ago. I grew up in and around Long Beach (off and on) during the 80s and 90s, and the mothball fleet was pretty much gone by then.
That would have been a rather long time ago.
Why would we help Vietnam? Let them and the Red Chinese kill each other. Win-win, like Sunni vs. Shiite...
Didn’t they shun the children fathered by black servicemen during the war? I never heard they were “free of racism”.
Time for some Viet Q ships to visit the area.
My comment was specifically about your statement thst we should attack China on behalf of the Vietnamese. No thanks!
...
Who DOES like China in that region? Well other than North Korea...
I believe that China is interested in oil in the South China sea. Hmm. Maybe they are thinking with oil at $20(?) a barrel now is a good time to strike? “Let China have it - for that price it isn’t worth the fight.”
Communications between planes and towers are done in English too... even when both are not ‘english’ based.
Lots of American companies are going to start buying from Vietnamese companies in the future.
Vietnam pretty much abandoned Communism in 1986. Old farts who ran the country just wanted to have a nice “retirement” and keep the people happy.
In fact, they did a survey of populations of different countries, and it turned out that the citizens of Vietnam were the most pro-Capitalist on the planet.
Ho Chi Minh would turn over in his grave.
