CT doctors say controversial anti-malaria drug helping Coronavirus patients (Hydroxychloroquine)

Connecticut doctors are finding some success in treating COVID-19 patients with a controversial malaria drug that has undergone very limited testing in its effectiveness against the coronavirus.

In Bridgeport Hospital, virtually every patient in the intensive care unit has been given hydroxychloroquine - which is normally used to treat lupus, an auto-immune disease, as well as arthritis and malaria - said Dr. Zane Saul, chief of infectious disease there.

“We use this more for its anti-inflammatory properties,” Saul said in a phone interview from the hospital. “We’re using this is our protocol.” He described the results so far as “positive” in patients meeting certain criteria including low oxygen levels in their blood.

“We’re collecting data, so we don’t have any clear data,” Saul said. “I don’t think anyone does. We’ll know later in the year when all the data comes in. For the most part people are able to tolerate it. It does cause nausea and diarrhea.”

While the drug’s use in battling the coronavirus has been touted in recent week’s by President Donald Trump, the highly limited clinical trials have come under fire by large segments of the medical community, including warning that shortages of hydroxychloroquine endangers the health of its traditional lupus patients. On Monday, a fact-checker report in the Washington Post further exposed its shortcomings.

At Bridgeport Hospital, part of the Yale New Haven Health System, Saul said that sometimes, patients can remain on it for only limited amounts of time.

“This is by no means a benign drug, but we felt good enough to people who are a little sicker,” Saul said. “Everybody in the ICU is on it because they are the sickest of the sick.” Patients with histories of heart problems are kept away from it.

Rachel Maddow is still debunking this claim.

At what point does malpractice come into play with the refusal to prescribe this drug protocol? Political beliefs are no reason to withhold medication which results in your patient’s death.

I wouldn’t be surprised if plenty of them took it.

It does cause nausea and diarrhea.
Oddly enough, so does the Kung Flu.

LIARS!!! Orange Man Bad!! That's all you need to know!
Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

The false positive rate was 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...

If a quarantine saves just one child's or one old fart’s life, it's worth it.

HCQ is only controversial cuz the media don't want to see lives saved. They want more deaths so they can accuse Trump of killing people (why not include Pelosi?). Accusing him of not acting earlier, but not asking China why they did not is hypocritical.

It’s only controversial because the media needs to have something to rail against.

Here in Nevada, Gov. Sisolak threatened any doctor who dared prescribe it with license revocation.

Turns out Gov. Sisolack was himself hoarding hydroxychloroquine both for himself, and for convicted felons in prison.

With luck, when the dust settles, those will be one and the same...

Vaping hash would be a controversial treatment.

The media believes their own bullstalin.

I don’t see how any of this is legal.

Off label prescription is a known thing in medicine.

How is this less private than a doctor killing a woman’s baby?

Nope

Although the media continually harps on the dangers of chloroquine with its side-effects, and loudly asserts that the Bad Orange Man is pushing this drug, hydroxychloroquine, which is the only version President Trump has reported has having promise, doesn't have those side effects.

Give the Gov some CV and let him sweat it out without the Trump Pills he hoarded.
