Well, I'm not a first-time gun owner...far from it, but please tell me exactly how a locked-up and unloaded firearm is going to any damned thing for me.

To be fair, that is a helpful suggestion albeit not in the way he intended. If your firearm is unloaded, it’s in storage and you should properly secure it - as in make sure it doesn’t fall over and damage itself or other firearms. :P
